 DEPARTMENT OR PROGRAM SPECIFIC
 The Stream Restoration Scientist provides scientific and technical support, aquatic expertise and leadership for freshwater conservation initiatives for the Mississippi Field Office, particularly in the realm of fluvial geomorphology, sediment transport, stream assessment and stream restoration  The Stream Restoration Scientist will assist conservation program staff in the assessment of channel and river condition and functionality; determination of river stability and departure from reference conditions; application of Natural Channel Design principles to stream/river stabilization and restoration; and overall technical integration of physical and biological aspects of river science for conservation programs. The Stream Restoration Scientist will also work with Program Directors on public policy as it relates to the conservation of freshwater biodiversity and will initiate and assist others in locating and developing the resources needed to implement successful freshwater conservation.  The position will initially coordinate the technical components of the Buttahatchie River Streambank stabilization project, which includes evaluation of priority bank stabilization sites on the lower Buttahatchie River, design of bank stabilization projects, and implementation of approach to estimating reductions in sedimentation rates from implemented practices.  The Stream Restoration Scientist will also assist in coordinating multi-state information sharing with other TNC conservation staff working on freshwater restoration projects that require a geomorphological approach to achieving project goals. 

The Stream Restoration Scientist will be supervised by the Mississippi Director of Conservation Programs and will work closely with SUSCR freshwaters staff, MS conservation and philanthropy staff, possibly conservation staff from other field programs, and numerous partners and stakeholders.

• Works collaboratively with other conservation staff to coordinate fieldwork and logistical support for research, design, implementation, and monitoring of stream/river restoration projects.
• Assists with implementation of top conservation strategies for the Buttahatchie /Upper Tombigbee, Lower Yazoo, Pearl River, and Pascagoula project areas or other sites as assigned, including strategies for sediment abatement and management; natural channel stabilization and restoration; and ecologically sustainable river engineering and river channel restoration.,
• Participate as needed in development of district/statewide water management plans.
• Conducts scientific surveys and research, records data and writes project reports.
• Coordinates/designs restoration practices for stream/river restoration projects using bioengineering and natural channel design approaches to address issues of bank/channel instability, inappropriate channel dimensions, and alterations to hydrologic and sediment budgets. 
• Delivers conservation tools, field services and training to Conservancy staff and partners.
• Leads assessments of freshwater conservation needs in Mississippi.
• Supervises field technicians and other staff as needed.
• Prepares proposals to leverage funding for conservation programs.
• Networks with TNC’s freshwater conservation networks and serves as the Mississippi TNC representative on regional freshwater conservation teams.
• Assists SUSCR Senior Biohydrologist in coordinating information and resource sharing among TNC staff throughout the Southern Region working on stream/river conservation projects that require a geomorphological approach to restoration.
• Engages full suite of partners (other organizations, federal, state and local agencies, and academia) in project implementation.
• Participates in education and outreach activities and community relations as necessary.
• Operates and maintains a range of field equipment, including boats and outboard motors, 4-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 The Applied Scientist II provides technical and scientific support and leadership for conservation initiatives in conservation action planning (CAP) or other conservation activities and measures of conservation success (MOS).  Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard methods and techniques. This includes the following functions:

• Conducts scientific surveys and research, records data, writes project reports and develops proposals
• Delivers conservation tools, biodiversity data, field services and training to Conservancy staff and its partners
• Coordinates fieldwork and logistical support for research, project development and monitoring
• Helps develop adaptive management plans, develops conceptual models, and identifies and designs ecosystem conservation strategies
 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 • Graduate degree in science-related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
• Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information and preparing reports on findings.
• Peer reviewed publication record.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite Software.
• Experience working and communicating with a diverse group of people.
