BERR is looking for an experienced professional to manage the multimillion pound contract, awarded to a consortium led by Parsons Brinckerhoff, for a Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Severn Estuary. This is:

A unique position in a pioneering project, in a sector of growing global interest;
Right at the heart of Government decision-making and at the leading edge of European environmental policy;
Supported by BERR's 20-strong tidal power team with a wealth of experience, and working closely with Defra, Welsh Assembly Government, and agencies;
Offering great development and training opportunities across Government;
Open to flexible and remote working.
This major SEA is a key part of the cross-Government feasibility study, led from BERR, to assess the feasibility of generating electricity from the huge tidal range of the Severn Estuary.

The SEA will analyse how the environment around the estuary would be affected if a tidal range power project goes ahead. It will consider the different technology and location options for a project; measure and assess environmental impact in areas including hydraulics and geomorphology, species and biodiversity, flood management impact, water quality, compensatory habitat and more; it will produce an Appropriate Assessment and all requirements of the SEA process.

We are looking for a person with:
A proven track record of successful contract management on this scale
The flexibility to manage a unique, complex and fast-moving process;
People skills to work effectively with a wide range of expert stakeholders and within a close-knit team; and
Financial and people management skills.

The successful candidate will also ideally have:
Coastal/marine environmental expertise and knowledge; and/or
Experience of SEA requirements.

The closing date is Wednesday 2 July 2008. Interviews will be held on Tuesday 15 July at BERR's offices on 1 Victoria Street SW1H 0ET, central London.

BERR is an equal opportunities employer and aims to reflect the diversity of British Society.
