Description
The Nature Conservancy is the world’s leading conservation organization, working in all 50 states and more than 33 countries. Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Stewardship Assistant will represent The Nature Conservancy on two on-the-ground, stewardship projects in high-priority watersheds that feed the Bighorn River in NW Wyoming.  In the Grass Creek drainage, The Conservancy manages a WY Department of Environmental Quality grant aimed at implementing livestock BMPs, reducing weed infestations, and establishing long-term water quality and range monitoring. The Stewardship Assistant will work with agency partners and private landowners to collect range, riparian, and water quality monitoring data and assist with other grant-related tasks as needed.  In the Cottonwood Creek drainage, The Conservancy is working cooperatively with numerous governmental and private partners to improve riparian areas by replacing invasive tamarisk and Russian olive with native tree species on 75 stream miles. The Stewardship Assistant will work with Conservancy staff and partners to identify and treat invasive plants, organize volunteer workdays, collect riparian monitoring data, and maintain field journals and equipment.

This position will provide an excellent opportunity for professional networking with governmental agency representatives, as well as private ranchers.  Partners on these projects include: Bureau of Land Management, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, UW Cooperative Extension, Hot Springs County Weed & Pest, and many others.  This short-term position will last from June through September 2010.

• Experience with range and/or water quality monitoring.
• Experience with invasive plant surveying, treatment and monitoring.
• Ability to navigate in the field using a map and GPS unit.
