Marine Park Intern

STENAPA is a non-governmental nature conservation organization based on the Dutch Caribbean island of St. Eustatius. STENAPA is legally mandated by the Island Government to manage all the island’s protected areas (the Statia National Marine Park, the Quill/Boven National Park as well as a young Botanical Garden) on the 21km2 island of St Eustatius.

We are looking for marine park interns to assist the marine park rangers with daily duties in the marine park. You will report to the marine park manager. The marine park extends around the island from the high water line to the 30m depth contour. It comprises of two marine reserves, one at the north of the island and one at the south. There are 36 dive sites which showcase the diverse coral reefs, seagrass beds and wrecks that St Eustatius has to offer. In addition there are yacht moorings and snorkel sites. Weekly maintenance of each mooring is a significant part of the role alongside data collection, invasive species monitoring and culling and participation in research. The majority of Marine Park maintenance is undertaken when diving. As an intern expect to be out on the boat twice a day diving multiple times in one day.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Assist the marine park ranger in maintenance of mooring sites
  • Assist in patrol of the marine park and reserves
  • Assist in research dives and data collection
  • Input research data into required database
  • Assist in building buoys for mooring sites, this includes splicing
  • Maintenance of dive equipment including filling up tanks
  • Organization of workshop and tools
  • Maintaining cleanliness of work area
  • Lionfish culling
  • Participation in coral restoration project
  • All interns are required to take part in nighttime patrol of the turtle nesting beach
  • Visitor center front desk duties on occasion
  • Occasional assistance in the Botanical Garden and on the trails in the National Park
  • Assisting with the education program and events

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Relevant educational qualification for example marine biology preferred but not a must
  • Experienced certified Advanced Diver but preferably certified Rescue Diver
  • Experience in marine research is preferred but not essential
  • Data entry experience and analysis (can be trained)
  • The applicant must be comfortable working with volunteers or volunteer work.
  • Comfortable with people of different nationalities
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a team but also able to work independently
  • Must be physically fit
  • Preferably no younger than 19 years old
  • English speaker.
  • Willing to do weekend and night work
  • Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license (preferably a manual driver)
  • Willing, enthusiastic and hard worker

Sea Turtle Program Assistant – St Eustatius National Marine Park

 

The internship will focus on various activities working alongside Marine Park staff:

 

  • Assisting the Turtle Coordinator with 3-4 night patrols each week for nesting sea turtles during nesting season (March– October). Also morning patrols and weekend work. Taking the lead on the field work and supervising assisting interns and volunteers. Conducting turtle talks and responsible for all data and data entry.
  • Assisting the Marine Park rangers with all aspects of ranger duties in the Statia National Marine Park, varying from maintenance of the moorings, lionfish eradication dives, assisting stakeholders, Park patrols and educational activities for groups of school children.
  • Helping National Park staff with coordination and work with children in snorkel club and junior ranger club each week.
  • Taking a lead on an individual research or management orientated project in line with the organization objectives – to be decided after orientation period of internship and to be completed before end of internship (this does not necessarily occur with every internship).
  • Assisting in other areas of the National Parks such as trail work and work at the Botanical Garden.
  • Assist with orientation and leadership of volunteers staying at the house

 

Work hours are from 7am-4pm with an hour break for lunch. Please note this is an unpaid position. Candidate should be able to start as soon as possible for a period of 12 weeks. More than 12 weeks is possible for Dutch Nationals only. It is an ongoing vacancy so it is possible to apply year round for different slots.
