California-based accomplishments include the Bottled Water Right to Know legislation, and an important victory to clean the San Francisco Bay from mercury contamination.

Clean Water Action provides recognized leadership on critically important environmental, health, ecosystem protection and community quality of life concerns. Recent examples include: arsenic in drinking water and "pressure treated" lumber; sewage pollution/dumping; mercury, power plant and incinerator pollution and safer renewable energy alternatives; wetlands, watershed and drinking water source protection; environmental funding and enforcement. Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund in California has enjoyed solid results in accomplishing its mission at its current level, and is now poised for future growth with the guidance of a strong State Director (SD). Working with both a local budget, and the support and collaboration from the national office, this is a perfect opportunity for a natural leader with an entrepreneurial spirit to help Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund reach its full potential, with plans to grow to a $1MM program within 2-3 years.

Budget and Staff

The Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund State Director reports to the Deputy Director located in Philadelphia, directly supervises 2.5 staff members, manages an annual budget of about $500K, and indirectly oversees 25-30 additional outreach staff and a total California budget of $1.5MM

Basic Function

The State Director is responsible for the overall management of Clean Water Action's and Clean Water Fund's programs in California including program and campaign oversight, management of personnel; leading strategic planning & visioning; fundraising and public relations; and fiscal oversight and budgeting. Based on the candidate's qualifications, this role can be expanded to Regional Director, managing programs and staff in other Western states as well. Regular travel throughout California and to other states supervised, and to occasional national gatherings is required.

Responsibilities

Specifically, the Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund State Director:

  • Develops and oversees programs and campaigns, including legislative and electoral campaigns, community and coalition organizing, policy development, and research and education programs.
  • Provides direction to local and state campaigns. Works in partnership with national staff to implement local and state elements of national campaigns.
  • Leads planning and implementation of strategies to build Clean Water Action in California.
  • Provides leadership and is a mentor to staff and volunteers. Ensures the highest effectiveness of campaign work and the attainment of established programmatic goals and priorities through team building and effective management.
  • Plans, leads, and helps execute fundraising efforts. In collaboration with the national office, the SD meets and networks with funders and prospective donors and has major responsibility for helping to enhance revenue streams.
  • Provides program direction and support for field and phone canvass programs. Works in partnership with canvass leadership to build strong canvass programs.
  • Oversees administrative and financial management systems and strategies, including budgets and other financial management tools.
  • Represents Clean Water in work with other organizations, public officials, funders and the media. Directs the marketing, public relations and promotion for all Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund activities, including, but not limited to community outreach, and media relations. Establishes and nurtures relationships with businesses, electedofficials, media and others who can help support Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund programs and campaigns.

Required Background

  • Passion for and commitment to the mission of Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund and environmental advocacy in general. Tell us about this in your cover letter.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in non-profit management as senior manager, campaign organizer or
  • equivalent.
  • Proven ability to manage legislative campaigns and issues-oriented programs. Experience with grassroots and
  • coalition organizing and campaigns is highly desirable, as is experience with electoral campaigns.
  • Experience with professional canvass programs is highly desirable.
  • Substantial record of successful fundraising from public and private sources, including major donors, to support
  • local agency programs.
  • Proven manager, motivator and staff leader. Enthusiasm, people skills, commitment, and an inspirational
  • leadership style are a must, especially for long-distance staff.
  • Financial acumen including budgeting, and fiscal management.
  • Exemplary communication skills including public speaking and writing, and an ability to network with
  • community representatives, business executives, foundation officials, donors, and the media.
  • Enthusiasm for and desire to successfully build the organization; thrives on taking ownership of and growing the
  • local program.
  • Ability to understand ones strengths and acknowledge ones weaknesses to then ask for support and/or delegate
  • those responsibilities.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Compensation

The compensation package is competitive. Final salary offered will be based on the applicant's meeting job qualifications, commensurate relevant experience, and specific roles and responsibilities assigned. Comprehensive benefits package. Salary range: $65,000-75,000 annually, and will be reviewed regularly based on goal achievement.
