Job summary

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive, the Director's post is a key strategic and leadership position within the organisation. As part of the Senior Management Team, the post holder will be responsible for contributing to the delivery of the vision and mission of the MSC and to the collective management and strategic development of the organisation.
The post holder will be major contributor to the intellectual property of the organisation and will lead and be responsible for dedicated teams working on the development, maintenance and management of the MSC's Standards and Licensing Programme. Within the organisation the work will involve:-

* management of the fisheries team, led by the Fisheries Director (currently vacant), which is responsible for the oversight of the implementation of the MSC's environmental standard for sustainable fishing and fisheries policy development;

* management of the supply chain team, lead by the Supply Chain Director who leads the product integrity team which is responsible for the oversight of the MSC's chain of custody standard for seafood traceability and the logo licensing programme team; and,

* management of the policy development programme, led by the Policy Development Director, coordinating the policy development undertaken by MSC staff and consultants to improve methodologies and guidance that control the implementation of the MSC's standards and licensing programme.

The Director will also play a leading role liaising with external stakeholders and this will involve:

* coordinating the development and review, through the MSC's governance bodies and stakeholder consultation,, of new policies supporting the implementation of the MSC's standards and licensing programme;

* leading the MSC's technical contributions in support of our membership of ISEAL;

* engaging with inter governmental organisations to ensure consistency with international guidelines relating to the MSC's standards and programmes relating to certification and logo licensing;

* leading the engagement with the MSC's accreditation body to provide quality oversight of accreditation functions

* ensuring the competency and effectiveness of third-party certifiers through quality monitoring, performance evaluation and training, in collaboration with the MSC's accreditation body;

* representing the MSC at the highest levels in business, government, scientific circles and the non-profit world.

This post is critical to ensuring the credibility, rigour, quality and consistency of the MSC programme.


Required skills and experience


Technical

* Qualifications. The post holder will have a post-graduate degree or equivalent from the natural resource sector and it will be highly desirable that this demonstrates a strong understanding of fisheries management, marine conservation biology or marine environmental management.

* Experience. The MSC is looking for a highly motivated individual who can lead an equally motivated and well-qualified team. We envisage that the post holder will have substantial, experience that demonstrates the progressive development of a career that has gained this experience. Some of this experienced will have been gained from the pursuit of environmental sustainability within the natural resource sector. Additionally the applicant should have:

1. Empathy for the role of market-based eco-labelling programmes and be willing to champion such initiatives;
2. Familiarity with third party certification programmes, understanding the roles of certification and accreditation bodies; and,
3. Understanding of traceability systems and how to demonstrate chain of custody within the seafood supply chain.

* Considered Problem Solving. Well-developed analytical and systematic problem solving skills, demonstrating sound reasoning abilities and logical decision-making.

* Communication. Excellent communications skills are required in spoken and written English.

* IT. Well-developed computer and IT skills, including the use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat).


Personal commitment

The post holder will demonstrate a commitment to the importance of sustainable fisheries and the contribution of market based ecolabelling as an agent of change, showing an ability to withstand and respond objectively to challenge from stakeholders with differing viewpoints.

Stakeholder Oriented

It is essential that the post holder has a clear understanding of, and affinity to, stakeholder-engaged processes such as those operated by the MSC. The successful candidate will be able to:

* demonstrate effective experience of working in partnership with stakeholders in resource management, science or policy development, preferably in an international context. This may be from, but not limited to, the fisheries sector, scientific community, the conservation or environmental community;

* evidence of an ability to successfully manage relationships with colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators, with a people-centred approach to conducting business essential;

* demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC programme by stakeholders around the world.


Management and Organisational Abilities

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

* excellence in leading and motivating teams of people to achieve the overall mission and vision of an organisation;

* an ability to develop their teams performance through coaching and effective communication, resolve personnel issues and add value to their staff;

* strategic thinking and planning at an organisational level;

* experience in developing budgets and monitoring expenditure; and,

* a high level of experience in project management, delivery and evaluation.

Communication

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

* excellence in written and spoken English with an ability to communicate successfully with a diverse range of people. This will include an ability to represent the MSC as an ambassador and negotiator in an international arena at the highest levels of business, government, science and the non-profit world; and,

* presentation skills suitable for public speaking at international conference level and to governance bodies and other stakeholder groups.
