Description

Status: Full-time for 18 months

Salary: £24k per annum

Location: Stromness, Orkney

Closing date: 12 noon, 17 May 2019

Interviews: First week in June 2019.  Post to start July 2019

For over 50 years, the Scottish Wildlife Trust has worked with its members, partners and supporters in pursuit of healthy, resilient ecosystems across Scotland’s land and seas for the benefit of people and wildlife. The Trust successfully champions the cause of wildlife through policy and campaigning work, demonstrates best practice through practical conservation and innovative partnerships, and inspires people to take positive action through its education and engagement activities.

A key component of the Trust’s work towards achieving a healthy and productive marine environment has been its Living Seas project, which is about to begin its new Oceans of Value project, funded by the John Ellerman Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The Oceans of Value project will investigate two different ways of valuing the marine environment – stakeholder valuation using the Community Voice Method and natural capital valuation – and how these different valuation techniques can assist decision makers.

The Oceans of Value project will focus on the marine environment around the Orkney islands and it is intended that this assessment will provide useful insights for marine planners in Orkney who are in the early stages of developing the Orkney Regional Marine Plan.

The Trust is looking for a Stakeholder Engagement Officer (SEO) to carry out the Community Voice Method component of the project. The SEO will be responsible for interviewing stakeholders, developing a short film, running workshops, and writing up a final report. The post is located in Stromness, Orkney, at the Heriot Watt University campus, and will involve working collaboratively with a master’s student.

You should have a post-graduate degree in environmental, marine or social science, experience with stakeholder engagement, and, ideally, a good knowledge of the Orkney region – the marine environment, key industries, and marine management.

You should have excellent communication, writing, time management and organisation skills, and be confident and comfortable working independently.

This is a new post, funded full-time for 18 months.
