Applications are being accepted to fill a Staff Biologist Position shared between two research programs at Mote Marine Laboratory:  the Marine Biomedical and Marine Immunology Programs.  This position requires knowledge of an advanced type, including basic lab techniques, biochemistry, immunology, and physiology acquired through specialized college-level instruction and study, as well as advanced skills in the laboratory. 

General Duties:  Laboratory based research focuses on biochemical, immunological, and physiological aspects of sharks, skates and rays. Additionally, immunology-based studies with other marine species may also be conducted. The Staff Biologist will be responsible  for ensuring cleanliness and organization of research laboratories, performing various laboratory procedures, ordering and maintaining inventory of reagents and supplies, maintaining captive research animals, managing research data, participating in staff meetings, and supervising college interns and/or volunteers. Experience with cell culture techniques is preferred since this position involves regular maintenance of cell lines and conducting cell culture experiments. The Staff Biologist may also participate in field sampling of animal specimens or samples, but this is expected to be a minor component of this position. 

Working Hours:  Normal hours are 8 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday, with lunch from 12 noon – 1 pm.  Occasional shift work may be required.  Occasional longer daily and/or weekend hours may be required to complete specific tasks.  Occasional multi-day travel may also be required.

Minimum requirements:  Undergraduate college degree from an accredited institution, with a degree in a biological science preferred. Certificates in biomedical/biotechnology fields may be helpful, but are not required.  U.S. citizenship or foreign citizen’s U.S. work permit appropriate for the work.

Salary:  ~$32,000 per year.  This is a full-time position will full benefits including health insurance and retirement plan.
