The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is dedicated to the conservation and protection of gorillas and their habitat in Africa. We are committed to promoting continued research on threatened ecosystems and education on their relevance to the world in which we live. In collaboration with government agencies and other international partners, we also provide assistance to local communities through education, training and economic development initiatives. We are a separate entity with Atlanta headquarters based at Zoo Atlanta. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is seeking a Full Time Staff Accountant to perform a broad scope of professional accounting activities requiring experience, professional knowledge and application of accounting principles and practices. The successful candidate will perform a wide range of accounting functions and will assure day-to-day operations are carried out in accordance with established accounting principles, policies and objectives. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work independently and exercise professional judgment and will report directly to the Director of Finance and Administration. Duties: • Prepares journal entries, maintains ledgers, prepares cost accounting information, and reconciles and analyzes reports and ledgers. • Prepares straightforward or recurring accounting schedules, statements or reports for management or outside agencies to reflect financial situation; assists Director of Finance with ad hoc assignments. • Reviews reports, fund or account statements and bank statements; investigates variances and reports to Finance Director; makes necessary journal entries as approved. • Records revenues, disbursements, expenses or other transactions by posting to records or ledgers; takes trial balances and prepares simple analyses and/or reports. • Analyzes transactions and documents procedures to ensure compliance with accounting principles. Insures proper handling of financial transactions; approves transactions within designated limits. • Analyzes accounting data and makes general interpretations and recommendations. • Reviews work of clerical staff. • Provides solutions to problems presented by other staff and recommends changes to accounting system, methods or procedures to management, utilizing knowledge of accounting principles and practices. • Keeps informed by researching and evaluating appropriate professional and related legal literature as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and procedures. • Skill in performing detailed numerical computations. • Skill in preparing detailed reports on a timely basis. • Skill in both verbal and written communication. • Skill in the use of computer hardware and software. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field and one year of professional accounting experience; OR, Five years' professional accounting experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Knowledge of QuickBooks and Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge is a plus. Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite.
