The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.3 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Livingston, Montana and Beijing.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and nurture strong relationships with decision makers, elected officials and allies to advance and defend strategic environmental priorities, policies and laws on state, regional and local levels, and coordinate with colleagues to strengthen effective relationships with key federal officials.
- Provide written and oral advocacy to further NRDC’s environmental policy priorities, including, but not limited to clean energy, utility reform, safe and sufficient water, clean air and wildlife, at state legislatures, state agencies, the executive branch, and before regulatory forums such as the Illinois Commerce Commission and Pollution Control Board.
- Develop state-level support to defend, and further energy and environmental policy; build local partnerships and provide leadership at state policy forums.
- Conduct policy research and analysis to develop and support positions.
- Coordinate and represent NRDC in coalitions on environmental and energy issue-areas.
- Provide strong expertise and experience to inform strategy, campaign activities, and stakeholder engagement.
- Respond to media requests and develop advocacy material to spread NRDC’s message in coordination with NRDC’s Communications department.
- Work with the Director, Deputy Director and other members of the team, as appropriate, to set priorities, budgets and timelines and effectively deploy consultants and partners to meet project timelines and objectives. As appropriate, manage state and regional budgets.
- Be a central part of a strong and collegial team that is both focused on meeting project expectations and using the full range of expertise at NRDC and among its partners to support effective change.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree or academic/experience equivalent in relevant field.
- 7-10 years’ experience in environment, climate or energy policy, and/or relevant governmental, regulatory or legislative experience.
- Experience working on other environmental policies, including safe drinking water, wildlife protection, clean water and/or clean air policies, particularly pertaining to policy development and implementation.
- A sense of mission and passion for protecting the environment and advancing NRDC’s policy priorities.
- Ability to represent NRDC with maturity, judgment and professionalism.
- Track record of cultivating high-level relationships with non-profit, political and philanthropic leaders.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
- Significant project management experience.
- Willingness to travel.
