MAIN DUTIES
Carry out casework in relation to protected species (particularly bats, otters, dormice and great crested newts), including site visits when appropriate.
Provide specialist advice to Regional colleagues on species issues.
Help to deliver CCW’s licensing function, assessing applications and monitoring of licences as appropriate.
Help to deliver Welsh Government’s (WG) licensing function, assessing applications and monitoring licences as appropriate.
Assessment and advice on planning applications and other development control type proposals which impact upon protected species.
Provide training and coaching to Regional colleagues on protected species work.
Provide advice to other organisations and members of the public on protected species, including consulting with statutory bodies.
Respond to wildlife enquiries from the public, including advising householders and others, preparing advice letters about bats.
Contribute to developing species policy and procedures.
Provide advice and assistance to our Wildlife and Environmental Crime Officer and the police on enforcement cases involving protected species legislation.
Contribute to the implementation of biodiversity action plans with respect to protected species.
Participate in survey and monitoring programmes for selected species.
Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others and comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate.
Behave in accordance with our corporate values.
Consistently meet the standards required to fulfil the service expectations of your internal and external customers/citizens and partners.
Carry out other general duties as necessary.

JOB COMPETENCIES
To be considered for this post, you will need to demonstrate the following competencies:
Essential
A good understanding in a relevant subject (ie botany, zoology, ecology, environmental studies or similar).
A working knowledge of nature conservation issues, including the ecology of a range of protected species.
A working knowledge of wildlife legislation, particularly that relating to protected species.
The ability to negotiate with a wide range of people, including landowners and planners.
Good written and spoken communication and presentational skills, with the ability to write clearly for a wide range of target audiences.
Initiative and enterprise, and the ability to work in team situations.
A working knowledge of IT data systems.
- The ability to currently and legally drive a car in the UK.
An awareness of Welsh culture, and a positive attitude to linguistic and cultural diversity.
The ability to use basic Welsh conversational phrases (eg “bore da” – “good morning”) and to pronounce Welsh place names correctly.
Desirable
- Fluency in spoken Welsh.

SALARY
The starting salary will be £11,701.02 a year which is pro rata to a full-time rate of £19,679.00 a year.

STATUS
This is a fixed-term, pensionable part-time appointment of 22 hours a week to cover the maternity leave of the permanent postholder. This is currently expected to end on 16 August 2013, but may end earlier or later if the permanent postholder returns to work earlier or later.
