The Environmental Investigation Agency has been at the forefront of efforts to combat environmental crime since 1984. EIA’s unique approach involves utilising undercover investigation techniques to expose environmental crime in three main areas; illegal trade in wildlife, smuggling of ozone-depleting chemicals and e-waste, and illegal logging and associated timber trade. EIA’s Forest Campaign works to reduce global deforestation and degradation by improving forest governance in producer countries and implementing demand side controls in major consuming markets.

Purpose of Post

The Specialist Investigator will work as part of EIA’s Forest Campaign team, although assistance to EIA’s other campaigns may be required on occasion. The role involves planning and carrying out field investigations into forest crimes, with a main focus on East Asia. Principal activities will include: trade data research & analysis; monitoring of campaign-related news and legislation; investigation planning, including desk-based and reconnaissance field work; development of appropriate investigative ‘covers’ and tools; risk assessment; use of covert and other investigative equipment; recording and reporting of investigation findings; participation in campaign and organisational strategic planning.

Main Responsibilities

  • Identify investigative opportunities to enable EIA’s Forest Campaign to meet its goals
  • Develop investigation plans with relevant staff in EIA’s Forest Campaign team
  • Undertake on-site investigations as part of an EIA team
  • Work effectively with EIA’s NGO partners in key countries
  • Ensure that security and safety issues are embedded in investigation plans
  • Utilize covert techniques, such as hidden cameras, as appropriate
  • Provide a full written report of all field trips
  • Gather visual evidence during field trips
  • Contribute to the production of external publications and short films
  • Develop an effective network of contacts

Essential Requirements

  • Five year’s experience in a campaigning organisation, journalism, business research or similar field
  • Ability to travel at short notice, including to potentially challenging environments
  • Strong English communications skills, especially writing
  • Demonstrable research skills
  • Experience of camera work (film and/or photography)
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Affinity with the aims of EIA
  • Legal right to work in the UK

Desirable Skills

  • Fluency in at least one language other than English, especially an East Asian language    
  • Experience of working with people from a variety of cultures and countries
  • Previous experience of field investigations
  • Knowledge of tropical forest issues
  • Knowledge of international commerce
