Description
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of everyone in England and Wales. The Agency’s Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards provides advice and undertakes research on the human health effects from radiation, chemicals and poisons in the environment.

Do you want to help us help people adapt to the effects of climate change?

We're home to leading specialists in the adverse effects of chemicals, radiation, and noise. We are extending our remit into the area of climate change. We provide vital advice to the Government and the NHS and our scientists interact with a large number of organisations and individuals in the UK and abroad.

You will join a new team of scientists advising on the effects of climate change on health and on how people can adapt to these changes. We are concerned to develop work on the effects of episodes of high concentrations of ozone, these are often associated with heat waves. Separating the effects of ozone and temperature is difficult and you will undertake non-lab based research in this area. Developing advice that will allow people to avoid these effects will be a central part of your job. You may be asked to set up and manage a Independent Expert Group to advise in these areas. You will be required to lead in the development of new thinking in these fields and to collaborate with research workers in UK universities. The role offers wide ranging experience in the scientific basis of assessing risks, in close liaison with Government departments and agencies and independent experts. You will be the Agency's lead figure in this area.

A relevant PhD or equivalent qualification is required along with relevant work experience in the climate change or a closely related field.

For further information and an informal discussion please contact Dr Robert Maynard (Head of Air Pollution Unit) on 01234 841470.
