3 Months

Ideal internship period

July – September, 2011

Internships Available:

The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.  Our 20 member development team is responsible for raising financial and philanthropic support for the Rainforest Alliance’s conservation programs around the world, a portion of which is raised from corporate and individual giving for special events.

Project

Beginning in July 2011, the Special Events Intern will be responsible for assisting the Special Events team in its preparations for the 25th Anniversary gala in 2012 as well as smaller fundraising and cultivation events.  The gala is the Rainforest Alliance’s largest annual fundraiser, with over $1.4 million raised in 2010.  This is a black-tie event that features a dinner, a short award ceremony and an auction.

Tasks will include research projects related to the planning of 25th anniversary events, researching new items for the gala auction, soliciting for auction item donations via email and phone calls, assisting in the coordination of mail lists and mailings.  The Intern will also help with coordinating other event logistics as needed.

This hands-on position is an excellent opportunity to learn about what it takes to put on a large scale, high profile fundraising event.  Joining the Rainforest Alliance team also affords an inside look into the workings of a large, multi-national environmental non-profit.

Qualifications

Candidate must be a student currently enrolled in a university or college and in good academic standing.  This position is ideal for students receiving academic credit for internships.    The candidate should be interested in special events fundraising.  The candidate should also be a self-starter, resourceful and detail-oriented with great written and oral communication skills.  Adeptness with the Internet and Microsoft office is required.  Experience with Raiser’s Edge is a plus.  This position requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week.
