The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

Position Summary: 

The Special Events & Membership Assistant will be responsible for providing support to the Senior Manager, Special Events and the Membership Manager.  S/he will assist in the planning and execution of fundraising and cultivation events, meetings, conferences, auctions and other events as they are scheduled and the planning and execution of member acquisition, retention and stewardship. Responsibilities for this position will be split evenly between the Special Events and Membership departments.

Responsibilties: 
  • Assist with the coordination of event-related logistics including database management, management of payment process and tracking sheets, vendors and event arrangements;
  • Handle all data updates in Raiser’s Edge and other files;
  • Run queries using Raiser’s Edge database to create event invitation and mailing lists;
  • Assist with the drafting and coordination of paper and electronic mailings including event-related solicitations, invitations and acknowledgement letters and other correspondence/mailings;
  • Assist with the research and identification of new event supporters, sponsors, honorees and celebrity hosts/entertainers;
  • Assist with the design of paper and electronic event materials including save-the-date cards, invitations, journals, advertisements and other communication materials as needed using Adobe PhotoShop and Convio;
  • Provide research and collaborate in the conceptualization, development, writing, and editing of membership fundraising campaigns;
  • Facilitate stewardship of members, identify new membership benefits and follow-up on donors requests;
  • Represent the organization at membership cultivation events;
  • Oversee registration and maintain Rainforest Alliance’s profile for workplace giving campaigns, matching gift programs, donor advised funds, etc.; and
  • Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • 1-3 years fundraising experience with demonstrated experience in event planning and/or membership preferred;
  • A minimum of 1 year administrative experience preferred;
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office required; experience or knowledge of Convio, Raiser’s Edge preferred; experience with Adobe PhotoShop, Lexis Nexis and Acrobat a plus);
  • Must be comfortable promoting events and asking for in-kind donations;
  • Excellent writing, editing, researching and verbal communication skills required;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact culturally, linguistically and diplomatically with diverse internal and external individuals;
  • Must work well independently and on a team, multi-task and work under tight deadlines;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a time sensitive manner; and
  • Knowledge of and commitment to environmental issues and sustainability practices preferred.
