ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
|
|
The Southern Wyoming Land Steward develops, manages and advances conservation programs, plans and practices on TNC properties and in the region. This may include the following functions:
- Plans and implements preserve management programs and stewardship actions for Red Canyon Ranch and the Sweetwater Preserve.
- Supports and participates in stewardship activities on other TNC properties
- Addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species
- Fosters cross-site learning among conservation and agricultural community
- Develops and implements conservation strategies, including ecological monitoring programs
- Works as part of a team to revise and implement management plans for TNC preserves
- Works independently or as part of a team to develop grant proposals related to stewardship practices, rangeland ecology research, outreach programs.
- Develops and manages pasture lease agreements with partners and lessees
- Coordinates community support
- Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and manages public use program
- Supports ongoing operational needs of TNC preserves in Wyoming (i.e. work to schedule contractors for labor, identify and address infrastructure needs, work with partners to identify stewardship needs and implement work plans, etc.)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
|
|
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years experience in natural resource management / range management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with rangeland agricultural operations in the Western U.S.
- Experience with federal land management agency regulations and programs.
- Experience preparing grant proposals and administering grants and contracts.
- Experience with rangeland monitoring protocols and improvement practices.
- Experience with educational programs and commitment to outreach and education.
- Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years experience in natural resources management, rangeland ecology, wildlife management or closely related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Familiarity with general ecological principles, basic experimental design and field sampling techniques.
- Ability to design and conduct ecological field work, including rangeland assessment and monitoring, riparian system evaluation, rare plant population monitoring, invasive species monitoring and control.
- Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects and timelines.
- Ability to communicate and work closely with scientists, educators and agricultural producers
- Knowledge of trends and practices in conservation, rangeland science and natural resource preservation
- Experience working with students in education and outreach programs
- Experience in training and curriculum design.
- Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with the public and/or media
- Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
- Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
- Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
The position may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:
- require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
- present frequent possibility of injury
- require long hours in isolated settings
