An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join BirdLife Australia’s Woodland Bird Program as the Southern NSW Woodland Birds Project Officer. This role will assist in implementing and delivering a project aimed at restoring landscape connections for threatened nectar-feeding woodland birds.  It will deliver a ‘Birds On Farms’ program approach that encourages landscape-scale management of temperate woodlands in the greater Holbrook region on the south-west slopes of New South Wales, using the Black-chinned Honeyeater, Little Lorikeet and Dusky Woodswallow as flagship species. The project will also look to provide benefit for a variety of woodland species, including the Painted Honeyeater, Swift Parrot, and Regent Honeyeater.  The project is co-funded by the NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program (via its Environmental Trust), and the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife (FNPW).

Reporting to the BirdLife Australia’s Woodland Bird Program Leader and working in collaboration with the Holbrook Landcare Network within the Great Eastern Ranges Slopes2Summit project area, the role will address a series of threats common to a number of woodland-dependent species using nectar-feeders as the flagship.  Project activities responsibilities will include:

  • promoting and coordinating the establishment of a ‘Birds On Farms’ program in the project area and immediate surrounds (which includes monitoring, habitat restoration and interventions, and species management);
  • encourage incidental reporting of all target species (Black-chinned Honeyeater, Little Lorikeet and Dusky Woodswallow) to gain a better insight into their distribution and movements within the Slopes2Summit area;
  • conducting community education, bird identification and monitoring technique training workshops
  • facilitating quarterly bird surveys on private property, and where required undertake monitoring surveys
  • undertaking desktop mapping and prioritisation process within the Holbrook Landcare region to determine priorities for restoration activity and conservation investment; and
  • producing community engagement materials around nectar-feeding woodland bird conservation.

The Southern NSW Woodland Birds Project Officer will be required to support/work closely with partner organisations undertaking on-ground works to reduce threats and improve habitat conditions for the threatened and declining woodland birds.  The position will also implement project management including collating project outputs for reporting to funding agencies, managing the project budget, and seeking funding and in-kind contributions to expand or extend the project.
