The SE Arizona Preserves Manager oversees the ongoing management of the Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve, Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, and Canelo Hills Cienega Preserve along with other TNC properties within the region. Ramsey Canyon Preserve alone hosts approximately 20,000 visitors each year and provides a major public outreach role for the Arizona Chapter, including the operation of a Visitor Center, natural history bookstore, and interpretive trail system. S/he serves as the principle contact to the Coronado National Forest and other local government agencies involved with fire management and prevention on or near the Preserve. This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Leads and manages the SE AZ Preserves team and a large volunteer workforce associated with the support of visitor services and land and water management on TNC properties.
  • Maintains the Conservancy as a collaborative conservation partner with other agencies and organizations within Southeastern Arizona.
  • Defines conservation management and/or monitoring priorities for the SE AZ Preserves.
  • Liaisons with the Director of Strategic Communications &Marketing to define and achieve outreach and marketing objectives, and directs outreach programs at the SE Arizona preserves.
  • Manages staff and finances associated with a small natural history bookstore whose revenues help to support preserve operations.
  • Develops key partnerships with public and private agencies and organizations in order to identify and resolve technical aspects related to preserve management issues.
  • Engages local community support for TNC’s local, state and national conservation efforts when requested.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in land management and operating and maintaining sites for the visiting public.
  • Experience with public outreach.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple endeavors or projects, including simultaneous staff and volunteer supervision, maintenance of visitor facilities, and/or retail operations, all with deadlines.
  • Experience with large-scale, multi-party partnerships.
  • Experience with fire management and risk with a focus on public safety issues.
  • Experience in written and verbal communication for a broad range of audiences.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree and 5-7 years experience in conservation practice, land management, visitor service, and retail sales or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in developing and implementing visitor services, and outreach programs
  • Supervisory experience including the ability to train, motivate, lead, set objectives for and manage performance of both staff and a large volunteer work force.
  • Experience in delivering practical, adaptable products and services to customers
  • Experience in influencing, developing and implementing conservation plans
  • Experience in politics and society with respect to environmental affairs
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
  • Experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
  • Experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc); political savvy.
  • Interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills. 
  • Basic computer knowledge (emails, spreadsheets, documents); proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, databases and Internet preferred.
  • Valid driver license required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Program Director I may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:

  • require occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present occasional possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings

This position may also:

  • require occasional travel domestically
  • require evening and weekend hours

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
