Description

The Coastal Conservation League is a nonprofit conservation organization that works with communities, elected officials, businesses, and citizen groups to protect the natural landscapes, abundant wildlife, clean air and water, and quality of life along the South Carolina coast. We are a group of 36 passionate individuals and tackle issues such as flooding, offshore drilling, improving transportation, and smart growth along the coast of South Carolina. We have offices in Charleston, Georgetown, Beaufort, and Columbia as well as operating a food hub in the Charleston area called GrowFood Carolina.

The Coastal Conservation League is searching for a full-time Director for the South Coast office which is located in Beaufort. The South Coast Office Director oversees all program work related to environmental resources, the community, and the quality of life in the southern South Carolina coastal region, including Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton and Colleton Counties. The Director works closely with the Charleston program staff on project strategy and the development staff with identifying and optimizing funding opportunities. This position requires excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills and an understanding of environmental issues including land use strategies, land conservation, air and water quality, energy, and sustainable agriculture.

The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, professional, and capable of managing multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced conservation advocacy nonprofit organization. This position supervises one full-time programmatic position in the South Coast office and reports to the Executive Director.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  • Build and manage networks with citizens, businesses, and public officials
  • Represent the Coastal Conservation League in the community
  • Oversee all South Coast projects (planning, policy, and regulations)
  • Develop and advocate for legislative policy relevant to South Coast issues
  • Write for media, grants, and other publications
  • Develop and create communication materials, including:
    • Social media and web-based communications
    • Traditional media
    • Manage the South Coast Office budget
  • Lead the South Coast program work
  • Work with a diverse set of interest groups
  • Think critically and strategically about complex policy and regulatory issues
  • Organize public opposition and support at the community and state level
  • Develop relationships with Coastal Conservation League Board members, donors, and members
  • Support GrowFood Carolina and other Coastal Conservation League initiatives in the South Coast as needed
  • Stay current on local news by reading and engaging in community outreach
  • Develop and implement an effective strategy for each project, while distinguishing between the elements that should be discussed with the Chief Strategy Officer and/or Executive Director
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Three years of relevant work or volunteer experience
  • Willingness and ability to attend events beyond work hours
  • Experience with grassroots advocacy campaigns
  • Demonstrated writing skills

Preferred Education and Experience

3+ years of experience in the environmental field, or in communications, media relations, campaign organizing, experience with grassroots advocacy campaigns, or related fields.
