Programme/project information
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual with experience of 'soil science' to join a cross-institute programme relating to predicting the environmental sustainability of bioenergy crop deployment in the UK. You will join part of a team at CEH Lancaster who are carrying out a 3 year UK wide field survey of soil carbon stock change after land use change to bioenergy crops (http://www.ceh.ac.uk/sci_programmes/ELUM-project.html). The primary duty with this role will involve the field collection and laboratory analysis of a large volume of soil samples for carbon and nitrogen stocks. You will be expected to take the lead in soil sample processing and analysis. Your role will include significant fieldwork for both soil and greenhouse gas sampling using a network of UK fieldsites.

Duties will include:

Soil sample processing including sieving, milling and preparation of samples for analyses i.e. pH, ammonium and soil carbon.
* Analyses of gas and soil samples using environmental analysis instruments.
* Numerous fieldwork campaigns (2-5 days away per trip) involving soil and gas sampling.
* Cataloguing and archiving of soil samples and datasets.
* Data analysis and preparation of method statements to assist with the production of scientific and contract reports.

Skills Required:

The following are essential requirements
* BSc trained in a relevant discipline for this post e.g. soil science, environmental science, soil chemistry.
* Field and laboratory experience with relevance to soils.
* The ability to undertake strenuous fieldwork on a regular basis.
* Good communication skills and the ability to work under your own initiative.
* The ability to manage your own time effectively.

Desirable:
* A full driving license.
* Data analysis in statistical packages.

Salary

The salary for this post is £19,540 progressing to £23,150 per annum. In addition NERC offer 30 days' annual leave and 10½ days' public and privilege holiday per annum.
