Description
This position will be based in Accra, Ghana on a renewable three-year term contract and will report to the Senior Program Officer based in Accra.

Key responsibilities will include identifying opportunities for grant support to improve the training of soil scientists on the principles and practice of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) at national universities; identifying opportunities for providing grant support for national universities and colleges to undertake problem-solving research in scaled-up projects on ISFM; providing support to universities and colleges in training extension staff and being engaged proactively in providing technical backstopping in projects aiming at wide-scale dissemination of ISFM practices; identifying and developing strategic partnerships with research and development agencies concerned with strengthening the training and research of ISFM technologies at national universities; identifying opportunities to improve the networking of soil scientists, agronomists and other researchers in universities in Africa that are engaged in ISFM technologies across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA); carrying out studies to determine the need for investment in strategic interventions that will improve the teaching and research of ISFM in national universities and colleges; identifying opportunities for linking universities and colleges with institutions of excellence outside Africa in ways that enhance the teaching and research of ISFM technologies; working with other AGRA programs in designing joint projects; initiating the contracting of grantees and the transfer of monies; and on-going supervisory oversight, monitoring and evaluation of awarded grants.

Applicants to this position must have an MSc or PhD degree in Soil Science, Agricultural Sciences, Rural Development or equivalent. They should also have extensive experience of educational and national agricultural research institutions in Africa. Over 10 years experience in soils research and teaching at university level is an advantage. In addition, the incumbent will need to display good knowledge on issues pertaining to curriculum development at tertiary level and educational policy with a bias towards the agricultural sciences. S/he will also demonstrate the ability to supervise students and design courses for short term training.
