Tetra Tech ARD (http://www.ardinc.com) is accepting expressions of interest from qualified Social Scientist candidates for the Forest, Carbon, Markets and Climate program (FCMC). FCMC’s two major deliverables include assisting countries with ambitious REDD+ plans by building capacity within those countries to achieve long-term net emissions reductions from forests and land use, and contribute to the evolving REDD+ framework.

This long-term program will be based in Washington, D.C. and will require periodic international travel.        

Responsibilities:

-- Provide socio-cultural research and analysis to the project on a variety of topics including natural resource management, community forestry, consultation and participation of indigenous people, and/or natural resource-based gender issues

-- Collaborate across technical areas to lead the development of:

·    analyses on social and environmental soundness (SES) methodologies and procedures and procedures used in REDD+ financing processes in light of USAID practices and procedures;

·    capacity-building on SES principles and practices;

·    strategies for USAID on engaging the REDD+ community on SES issues in climate change programming;

·    regional-level workshops and trainings (materials and facilitation) to diverse audiences in English and Spanish on engaging governments in SES best practices.

-- Establish and maintain productive and positive relationships with USAID, international government officials, multilateral and donor organizations, and local partners;

-- Provide strategic leadership and/or inputs on key cross-cutting programming issues including women’s economic empowerment, indigenous group and marginalized population rights and concerns;

- - Communicate analysis results to both lay and professional audiences, calling on strong research, writing, and presentation skills;

-- Establish and maintain productive and positive relationships with local officials, business interests, and implementing partners;

-- Oversee the implementation of a cross-sectoral research and analysis component.

 

Qualifications:                                                            

-- Educational requirements include at least a Master’s degree in anthropology, sociology, communication, development, or related field of study, PhD preferred;

-- A minimum of eight (8) years experience in designing and implementing social action research in the context of international development projects;

-- Prior successful experience as a Social Science Expert on USAID-funded project(s);

-- Substantial experience with USAID’s operations, procurement, administration and logistics, and management regulations;

-- Significant analytical and program coordination and implementation experience in and/or economic development programs in developing countries required;

-- Notable experience analyzing complex field operations utilizing SPSS and comparable statistical software in closed and/or transitional or developing countries;

-- Training expertise and exceptional verbal and written communication skills, especially in working across cultures;

-- English proficiency required with advanced proficiency in Spanish preferred.
