About FSC:

FSC is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental multi-stakeholder organization, established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Today, FSC is the leading forest management certification system in the world. FSC works by bringing people together to promote responsible forest management and to find solutions to the problems created by bad forestry practices. FSC does so by providing standard-setting, trademark assurance, accreditation services and business value for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry.

Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.

FSC is registered as an international NGO in Mexico, but has its operational headquarters in Bonn, Germany. FSC has 5 Regional Offices and is represented through National Offices or Representatives in 45 countries across the world.

Mission statement/  business objectives of the function:

The Smallholder Support Manager contributes to the achievement of the objectives of the Small Holder Support Program to develop better access to and benefits from FSC certification, with the goal of increasing the supply of FSC certified products from smallholders.

Main roles and responsibilities:

 

  • To develop, coordinate and implement strategies and projects that:
    • Facilitate the uptake of certification by small and community producers.
    • Improve the access to markets for FSC certified smallholders and community producers, including support for marketing and promotion.
  • To strengthen the engagement with networks of small and community producers.
  • To build a strong outreach program for distributing information materials and tools related to smallholders and communities.
  • To provide feedback to the FSC Policy and Standards Unit on possible improvements of FSC’s requirements for the certification of smallholders and community forest operations.
  • To manage other tools to support the uptake of FSC such as the FSC Training Platform and FSC Marketplace.
  • Additional Tasks as agreed with the Business Development Director.

Execution of discretionary power:

The position does not include any signing authority.

Functional attribution to organizational unit:

The Smallholder Support Manager reports to the Business Development Director.

Cooperation with other operational units:

 

  • All units of FSC International (Director’s office, Policy and Standards, Quality Assurance, Business Development, Network, Central Services)
  • ASI – Accreditation Services International
  • FSC Regional Offices
  • FSC Network Partners (e.g. National Offices, National Representatives, National Focal Points).

Qualification experience and skills:

 

The successful candidate demonstrates the following key competencies and qualities:

  • Education and Training: University degree in a relevant field, for example forestry, anthropology, biology, sociology, natural resource management.
  • Working Experience, Style and Skills:
    • At least 3 years of professional experience in social themes in the areas of natural resource management, preferably including the Global South.
    • Field-level experience of problems confronted and opportunities available to small scale natural resource management operations.
    • Ability to perform well while handling simultaneously a number of functions.
    • Solution oriented attitude to work.
    • Experience with financial administration.
    • Project management experience.
  • Languages:
    • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
    • Spanish is a plus.
  • Computer skills:
    • Good computer skills, including the use of standard software packages (MS Office).
    • Experience with database management and Content Management Systems is a plus.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills that create cohesive team efforts and affect decision making.
    • Active-listening skills, experience in communicating with the media and ability to facilitate interactive discussions and maintain positive interpersonal relations.
  • Others:
    • Ability to work well as a member of a multi-cultural, inter-disciplinary, multi-lingual, global team.
    • Commitment to FSC’s mission and values.
    • Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the FSC program by stakeholders around the world.
    • Familiarity at the general level with the scope of FSC’s programs of standard setting, accreditation, trademark management and political engagement.
    • Ability to represent FSC through his/her work with exemplary personal and professional authority and conduct.

Terms and conditions:

  • Location: Bonn, Germany.
  • Full Time: 40 working hours per week.
  • Temporary contract: 2 years – extension possible.
  • Starting date: As soon as possible.
  • Travel: Sporadic travel is required.
