Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. | | POSITION SUMMARY | | The Polly Holden Intern is a temporary, full time position. The intern will assist the Skylands Program outreach staff in the implementation and support of The Nature Conservancy’s conservation programs in northern New Jersey. Works in a program office and provides administrative, research, project management, and other general assistance to program staff working toward the achievement of protection, conservation and stewardship goals. | | ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS | | Provide support for: • education, outreach and volunteer program activities in the Skylands Conservation Area of New Jersey; • educational program development, producing publications and materials and assisting with media relations’ strategies to promote and increase public awareness; and • developing and implementing community outreach, volunteer and educational strategies that effectively communicates TNC’s conservation messages and promotes its conservation and community-involvement efforts. Assist with: • the development of educational programs for local school districts within conservation priority areas; • the design of outreach materials; • the coordination of and leadership of public and community field trips at selected preserves; • the construction and maintenance of preserve trail systems; and • the setup and running of volunteer stewardship workdays. | | BASIC QUALIFICATIONS | | • High school diploma and 6 months of related experience. • Experience with MS Office, Word, Excel, and navigating the Internet. | | ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION | | Preferred Qualifications • Knowledge of ecological and natural history concepts and the willingness to learn local flora and fauna. • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally. • Experience using design software such as Adobe In Design or Quark Xpress is helpful. • Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability. Ability to plan, administer, and record results of work-team meetings and activities. • Ability to: o sell ideas to a wide variety of people and interests groups; o complete tasks within assigned time frames, frequently in the absence of supervision; o work weekends; o manage multiple priorities and work independently; o persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including donors, board members, the public and others; o work cooperatively with a number of staff, sometimes under pressure; and o function productively as a member or leader of a work team. | | BENEFITS | | The Nature Conservancy offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits, flexible work policies and a collaborative work environment.
