The SFS Centre for Wildlife Management Studies, near Karatu, some twenty minutes’ drive from Lake Manyara National Park in northern Tanzania, seeks an enthusiastic, team-oriented Site Manager to provide hands-on facility maintenance (including buildings, grounds & vehicles), regular maintenance and repairs, work with the Centre Director to coordinate financial activities such as purchasing, payroll, bookkeeping, record keeping and payment to vendors, fund accounting and financial strategizing for optimizing resources, assist with overall supervision and assignment of duties for local Tanzania staff, and help the CD with community relationships.

Program Focus:
The SFS Centre for Wildlife Management Studies maintains field stations in northern Tanzania in Rhotia near Lake Manyara National Park and in southern Kenya in Kimana, Oloitoktok, near Amboseli National Park. We operate programs simultaneously at both field stations. The Centre is committed to providing educational and research opportunities to visiting students while collaborating with local stakeholders on setting the research agenda and sharing research outcomes. We operate year-round, delivering two semester and two summer programs. The Centre strives to make a meaningful contribution to the effective management of wildlife and regional ecosystems, and towards the rural development opportunities for local communities. The Centre research activities are carried out in four thematic areas: wildlife and range conditions, land reform and land use change, water resources, and communities and tourism.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain property, physical plant and equipment of the Centre to protect the value of the school’s physical assets including but not limited to minor construction, painting, rust proofing, electrical and plumping repairs – using locally source contractors on occasion
  • Assist in assessing, managing and improving the Centre’s use of resources such as water, energy and waste disposal capacity
  • Maintain accurate accounting software bookkeeping entries to track expenditures and budgets, receipts, cash tracking and accounting and budget reports (Blackbaud)
  • Work with Centre Director to prepare annual operating and capital budgets and budget revisions to submit to headquarters
  • Oversee the purchasing of supplies, food, equipment and services needed for the operation of the Centre
  •  Participate in planning activities prior to the program start and in review / analysis following students’ departure
  • As requested by the Centre Director, assist with other logistical, group management and administrative tasks
  • Take a responsibility, as an individual and as a member of the Centre staff team, for the safety of all program participants
  • Share with Centre Director, or other appropriate Centre staff, the responsibility of assessing the driving skills of staff and interns and determining the degree to which they can use Centre vehicles
  • At the request of the Centre Director, serve as caretaker for Centre during program breaks and Centre rentals
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Tanzanian work authorization required
  • A relevant BA/BS degree or equivalent combination of relevant work experience required
  • Bookkeeping skills with familiarity with Black baud and QuickBooks required
  • Experience in funds management and accounting, including using relevant software
  • Maintenance and construction experience including but not limited to painting, rust proofing, minor electrical and plumbing repair and maintenance, and grounds keeping required
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive manual transmission vehicles required
  • Experience working with building trade contractors and government agencies
  • Ability to understand maintenance and repair of vehicles
  • Supply ordering and inventory tracking experience
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Access) and Windows
  • Experience managing projects through proposal, quote, contracting, and delivery stages
  • Experience working with project or operations budgets
 
Other Expectations:
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and live on site at the field station with a small team of permanent staff and groups of US undergraduate students and visiting researchers or programs
  • Ability to work well both as a team member and independently
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental issues
  • At all times, work to ensure good relations between the SFS and the local community
  • Committment to zero-tolerance policy of alcohol and drugs on-site
 
Compensation/Benefits:
