Description

About the Physicians Committee

The Physicians Committee is leading a revolution in medicine—putting a new focus on health and compassion. The Physicians Committee combines the clout and expertise of more than 12,000 physicians with the dedicated actions of 150,000 members across the United States and around the world. Our efforts are dramatically changing the way doctors treat chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and cancer. By putting prevention over pills, doctors are empowering their patients to take control of their own health. And we are also building a new way of viewing research. Since 1985, the Physicians Committee has been working for alternatives to the use of animals in medical education and research and advocating for more effective scientific methods. Our staff of physicians, dietitians, and scientists is working with policymakers, industry, the medical community, the media, and the public to create a better future for people and animals.

We invite you to visit our YouTube channel, our website, and Physicians Committee president Dr. Neal Barnard’s blog.

About this Fellowship Opportunity

If you are a student or recent graduate who would like to have a real world impact on issues relating to preventive medicine, plant-based nutrition and alternatives to the use of animals in medical research, testing and training while gaining communications, social media, and media relations skills at a dynamic advocacy and research organization, then consider applying for this unique opportunity.

The Physicians Committee’s Communications team uses traditional and social media to publicize our varied campaigns, projects, reports, and books, including our annual Airport Food Review, the Food for Life program, the 21-day Vegan Kickstart program, and the Come Clean campaign.

The Communications Fellow will collect and organize data for the Physicians Committee’s annual report evaluating the healthfulness of food served in hospitals across the US, conduct online research and fact checking, write letters to the editor and other documents, assist with administrative duties, and other communications related tasks.

The Communications Fellow will be mentored by the Physicians Committee’s media relations manager. The fellow may also have the opportunity to participate in campaign events, staff education sessions, journal article discussions, Capitol Hill briefings, and other Physicians Committee events. All fellows will receive a full-day orientation at the start of their fellowship and ongoing support from their staff mentor.

This fellowship honors the late Ms. Simon Chaitowitz, a writer, public relations professional and longtime leader of the Physicians Committee’s communications department.

Qualifications:

If you are a team player with enthusiasm for the Physicians Committee’s mission to promote plant-based diets and alternatives to the use of animals in research, training, and testing; have an educational or employment background in journalism, communications, public relations; and have strong writing, organizational and time management skills, we’d like to hear from you.

Terms: The Physicians Committee is located in the Metro-accessible Friendship Heights neighborhood in Washington, D.C. The fellowship compensation is $9.50 per hour. Free housing accommodations at a guest house near the Physicians Committee office may be available if needed. The Physicians Committee will assist fellows in obtaining course credit if applicable. The ideal candidate will be able to work at least 32 hours a week and commit at least 10 weeks to the fellowship. Start and end dates are flexible.

All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
