POSITION SUMMARY
The Nature Conservancy is entering its fourth year of offering internships intended to increase the diversity of our staff. Our 2010 Summer Diversity Internship program seeks to enrich and diversify the field of conservation through paid internship opportunities to students currently underrepresented in the conservation field. The internships offered cover a wide range of fields and are available in locations throughout the U.S. and will begin June 7, 2010.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Silver Creek Preserve Lead Intern participates in preserve operations including the maintenance, management and development and coordination of conservation programs.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
• Leads work teams and supervises interns and volunteers
• Furthers the Conservancy’s strategic goals
• Coordinates community support
• Implements  preserve management plans
• Organizes and summarizes data and information
• Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
• Removes exotic species and/or monitors & researches species
• Maintains tools and equipment
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Knowledge of natural systems.
• Experience in ecological land management principles.
• Experience managing, maintaining and populating databases and manual files.
• Experience with producing maps and/or other graphic products and reports.
• Experience in analyzing data and producing data reports. 
• Experience supervising staff.
• Experience performing physical work.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and one to two years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
• Knowledge of ecological land management principles
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
• Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
• Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). 
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
• Safe use of maintenance tools; including lawn mowers, power tools and construction tools
• Coordinating multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes
• Compiling data, resolves disparities and modifies processes to generate plans
• Resolving routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems
• Cultivating and develops creative ideas to improve conservation strategies
• Applying diversified knowledge of scientific principles and practices to a variety of assignments



COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy efforts
• Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
• Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff and others, providing and obtaining needed information
• Interacts with preserve visitors, conveys basic preserve information and leads field trips

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Silver Creek Preserve Lead Intern may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
• require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• present frequent possibility of injury
• may require long hours in isolated settings and/or inclement weather

SALARY INFORMATION
Undergraduate: $10/hour
Graduate: Beginning at $12/hour

Housing is provided.  It will be shared housing (three bedrooms, each intern will have their own room), roughly six miles from the preserve office.   We usually hire two additional interns each summer, and these three interns will share a house.
