The Silver Creek Preserve Assistant is responsible for assisting the preserve staff with the daily operation and management of the Nature Conservancy’s Silver Creek Preserve located in Picabo, Idaho.   The Preserve Assistant will assist with biological and ecological data collection, research, preserve maintenance, public outreach, exotics control including herbicide application, and other preserve related activities.  The majority of the Assistant’s time will be spent working in the field with other volunteers and Assistants, as well as interacting with the public.  This position requires working both alone and in a team, sometimes in extreme weather conditions.  This is a 35 hour per week, position beginning May 18 and ending mid-August, 2015.  Must have valid driver’s license and safe driving record.  This position includes option for Assistant to live in housing provided by The Nature Conservancy.
 

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Silver Creek Preserve Assistant participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management.  This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
  • Removes exotic species and/or species monitoring
  • Assisting with outreach projects and public education events including interpretive outings
  • Assisting with conducting cooperative projects with surrounding landowners
  • Assisting with research,  habitat restoration projects, and scientific monitoring
  • Removal of  exotic species and/or assisting with species monitoring and mapping
  • Assisting with trail and grounds maintenance including clearing trails, repairing boardwalks, posting signs, fixing fences, and other tasks as necessary.
  • Maintains tools and equipment
 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
 
  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including other staff or volunteers.
  • Receives detailed instructions to complete required tasks.
  • May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision.
  • May resolve preserve management problems independently as delegated.
  • Consult with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.
  • Monitor the progress of work groups toward achieving preserve management goals.
  • Consults supervisor on unusual or complex issues
  • Make day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  • Ability to convey work instructions to other preserve management team members, including volunteers. 
  • Ability to interact with preserve visitors and to convey basic preserve information, possibly leading preserve field trips.
  • Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma and at least 1 year training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc).
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Conservation Practitioner II may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:

  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
 
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 

This is a full-time, short-term position with an employment duration less than 6 months.

 
AUTO SAFETY POLICY
 

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
