Description

Job Title: Associate Campaign Representative (Sierra Student Coalition, Beyond Coal)

Reports To: Sierra Student Coalition National Director

Context: Plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of staff and volunteers in carrying out the activities for Sierra Student Coalition's (SSC) campaign work, including coordinated work with the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, Beyond Oil Campaign, and other Sierra Club efforts. Participates in the development of strategies and priorities. Works with Sierra Student Coalition staff and regional Sierra Club staff, chapter/group volunteers, and with national and local coalitions to organize support for grassroots campaigns, events and skills training and to generate turnout for campaign visibility events.

Scope: Responsible for coordinating the campaign work of the SSC, including SSC’s coordinated work with Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, Beyond Oil Campaign, and other Sierra Club efforts. Participates in the strategies and helps to carry out organizational and issue visibility. Participates in activities and services provided by the SSC campaign. Works in close cooperation with volunteer leaders, national, state and local conservation staff on conservation campaigns.

Job Activities:

1. Mobilizes students to become involved in the SSC’s campaigns. Recruits and speaks at various campuses, events and conferences around the country and in regions not covered by the SSC Regional Campus Organizers.

2. Develops strategy, marshals resources, organizes staff and volunteer efforts, helps raise funds, monitors and tracks expenses on select campaigns. 

3. Coordinates the work of staff and volunteers to implement campaigns nationally, regionally and locally.

4. Plans and coordinates strategy and activities to obtain media coverage in regional and national media outlets. Participates in the development of media campaigns; may represent the Sierra Club in the media and promote volunteer media exposure. 
5. Directs the development and preparation of campaign issues information including the writing, editing and distribution of fact sheets, newsletters, and educational materials.

6. Represents Sierra Club in regional and national coalitions, at regional and national events and to the general public.

7. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.

8. Supports and provides professional assistance to volunteer conservation activities.

9. In cooperation with fundraising staff and SSC National Director, assists in the development of funding proposals and participates in grant making and solicitation efforts

10. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

-- BA or BS in Environmental Studies, Political Science or closely related field. 

-- One to three years of experience working with volunteers in the environmental movement, political campaigns, or other similar organizations to plan and implement grassroots campaigns.

-- Ability to work independently, cooperatively and effectively with the public, staff and volunteers.

-- Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to clearly explain complex issues and effectively communicate them to student volunteers. 

-- Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the environment, energy, or related public interest issues.

-- Proficient with computer skills including databases and word processing.


This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
