Background:

South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) aims to provide the best quality and most efficiently run services to its residents, whilst achieving value for money for the taxpayer. The Waste Management section provides an award winning service, and regularly achieves very high recycling rates. In 2004 the council won the Award for Excellence for Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative. SCDC, as part of the RECAP County partnership, was also awarded Beacon Status for Waste and Recycling in 2006. South Cambridgeshire continues to be a leading member in the RECAP County partnership (a premier waste partnership). A project has commenced for a complete review of the existing collection services, with options explored and considered to restructure the service.

Objective:

The two candidates will undertake training on specialist route optimisation software, whilst at the same time rapidly gain knowledge of the structure and operation of front line waste management services. Working with the Contracts Officer, they will then model the services currently provided in the software. Following this, options for future service design will be modelled in the software and benefits and savings identified. Officers will need to be flexible, as they will also be involved in other aspects of providing our waste management services, working with the Recycling Officer and other team members on various tasks, often involving travel around the district.

Benefits of this opportunity:

The candidate will gain valuable technical skills in market leading specialist software, gain a thorough understanding of waste management operations from one of the countries leading authorities in this field, and benefit from playing a significant role within a small project team. The skills and knowledge obtained can be transferable across a range of public and private sector positions, and will prove extremely valuable in the current economic climate where maximising resources and efficiency are high priorities.

Future employment potential and options:

There is a good opportunity for a successful candidate to have their contract extended, possibly up to one year. Previous support officers have moved into permanent positions in the public and private sector.
