Senior/Principal Marine Modeller

The Position

JBA Consulting is currently seeking an experienced marine modeller to join our Coastal Risk Management Group.  The focus of this Group is the marine environment and its risks and opportunities.  This Group consists of four units: Coastal Flood Modelling and Forecasting; Coastal Processes; Coastal Engineering; and Marine Renewables.  In particular, this post is with respect to our exciting and expanding marine renewables capability.

The successful candidate for this post will be expected to perform as a technical specialist for marine modelling and a project/resource manager.  The candidate will also be responsible for preparing project reports of a very high standard, presenting work to clients, and mentoring and reviewing the work of less experienced staff.  Our Group also has a strong focus on R&D and the development of innovative analysis and modelling techniques.  It is therefore expected that the successful candidate will demonstrate the skills required to contribute in this regard.

The successful candidate will be based in our Edinburgh office, which is situated on the shore of the Firth of Forth, with stunning views across the water.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants are expected to have at least five years’ commercial experience in one of the following sectors: marine renewables; offshore oil and gas; flood risk management; or similar.  The candidate will hold a degree in oceanography, civil or offshore engineering (or another relevant geo-science).  Chartered (Engineer, Scientist, Environmentalist) status is desirable.  Applications must be a national of the EU, European Economic Area or Switzerland, or hold a valid work permit for the UK.

Extensive expertise with respect to marine numerical modelling is essential to this role (e.g. hydrodynamic modelling, wave transformation modelling, sediment transport modelling, Delft3D, Mike21, SWAN, TELEMAC, etc).  It is also desirable for the applicant to have knowledge/experience with respect to some or all of the following:

  • Wave and tidal-stream technology;
  • Operations and maintenance activities in the marine environment (e.g. marine renewables, offshore oil and gas);
  • Marine ecology;
  • Marine forecasting;
  • Marine impact assessments (e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Habitats Regulation Assessment (HRA), and Socio-economic Assessment);
  • Marine planning and licensing; and
  • Marine engineering.

JBA Consulting is a heavily client focused organisation.  Excellent communication skills are therefore essential to this role.  Self motivation and a high degree of organisation are also essential.  The successful candidate must be willing to travel within the UK and occasionally abroad to service the role.

If you wish to discuss the post informally please contact Dr Mark Lawless (mark.lawless@jbaconsulting.com or 01756 799919) or David Bassett (david.bassett@jbaconsulting.com or 0131 319 2940).  Closing date for CV’s is the 6 September 2013.

Salary and Benefits

A competitive salary is available together with a comprehensive benefits package including personal pension, life insurance, medical assistance, subsidised permanent health insurance, child care vouchers, medical/dental care assistance and profit share.

The post holder will be entitled to between 20 and 23 days holiday per year (depending on experience) rising to 25 after qualifying service, plus statutory holidays.

JBA is committed to ensuring that all staff are able to work to their full potential.  We have in place a structured training and development plan and every member of staff has an Individual Training Plan and mentor.  JBA spends on average over £1,100 per person per year on professional development and training.

To apply for the post, applications should be in writing or by email/fax, using the standard JBA Job Application pro-forma or including your own CV.  A passport sized photograph, although not obligatory, would be appreciated.  JBA is an equal opportunities employer.  Further details from eRecruitment.
