About the role:

Umwelt is seeking a Senior/Principal Ecologist who is looking to progress their career in ecological consulting, based at our Canberra office. Our ideal candidate would have previous experience as an ecological consultant, is experienced in and enjoys dealing with clients and managing projects and would have sound ecological survey, reporting and assessment skills.  Excellent staff-management skills, self-drive and enthusiasm are essential ingredients to continue the growth of the Canberra office’s ecology services in response to client demand. You will work closely with our Canberra Manager and National Ecology Leader to deliver quality project outcomes.

About you:

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Senior/Principal Ecologist who has:

  • A degree/post graduate qualification in environmental science, botany, zoology, environmental management (or similar).
  • Sound technical ecological and project management skills including experience delivering ecological assessment and management projects in the ACT and NSW (Victoria desirable), as well as Commonwealth EPBC assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and undertaking ecological surveys, particularly flora survey and assessment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • An ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a range of stakeholders including clients, government agencies and councils, as well as other staff.
  • Experience as a reliable, communicative and proactive team member.
  • A high level of motivation and self-direction.
  • Previous experience in the collection and interpretation of biometric data and its use in the relevant state specific calculations in accordance with approved ACT and NSW methodologies.
  • Previous experience in Victorian biodiversity methodologies will be well regarded.

Desirably the applicant will also have:

  • Strong staff management and team co-ordination/leadership experience.
  • Existing strong relationships with clients from government and private sector, particularly in the ACT and NSW.
  • Ability to plan and implement marketing initiatives and team development activities, demonstrating previous experience and success.

The Senior/Principal Ecologist opportunity may be made available as a flexible part or full-time position to meet the needs of the successful applicant.
