As a member of a small web team at Greenpeace India, you get to do more than just code; you get to create the next cutting-edge online tool that could help Greenpeace stop a nuclear power plant, save our food chain or maybe save the turtles.

Purpose of the Digital Media Unit

The Digital Media Team (DMT) is responsible for managing the Greenpeace India website, communicating with all our supporters online through email and social media channels like Facebook and Twitter, and raising funds online. We work together with campaigners to find ways to use the power of the internet to mobilise large numbers of people around environmental issues and find informative, engaging and fun ways to win campaigns.

What will you be doing?

You will lead and manage technical projects for delivery of a tool/site/technology for campaigning purposes or internal purposes. You will also spearhead the development of new, innovative online tools that will enable us to deliver cutting-edge campaigns.

You will use your understanding of the software development lifecycle process to

-meet with all the relevant stakeholders involved in the project and understand and gather requirements

-convert these requirements into a technical specifications doc

- design the system based on these requirements (including functional specs, database design where necessary etc)

- identify what platforms, technologies, databases etc need to be used to create the system

- identify what development methodology to be used based on the time available for project delivery

- build and implement the system or oversee external development of the system

- ensure proper testing of the system and release

You will use your experience in Email Marketing/Online Advocacy to

- come up with ideas that would engage and mobilise large numbers of people to take a desired action (eg: sign a petition to a corporate, send a fax to a minister, donate to support our work etc)

- to design and implement online campaigns that fit well with our overall public campaign. You will work with campaigns staff, media officers, volunteer coordinators and our actions team to help develop a well-rounded campaign that can successfully mobilise people to bring about real world change

- increase conversion using your understanding of testing and optimizing emails, design, landing pages

- the main measurement criteria to track this work would be list-growth and fundraising

Examples of some of the projects you would be involved in
1. Setting up a microsite for a campaign

  • quickly gather the content that would go up on the site from the campaigners
  • understand from an online campaigning perspective what sort of sign-up details, viralisation tools etc are required
  • choose a technology to build the site on (eg: Wordpress)
  • oversee or actually implement the design and development of the site
  • setup the site on the hosting
  • test everything

2. Integrate our various data systems

  • understand the various data systems in place in the organisation
  • sit with stakeholders to figure out the data flows
  • document requirements for additional features that stakeholders would like
  • design the system for flow of data and processes. Identify the central
  • repository and all incoming and outgoing flows of data
  • work with a team or manage a vendor to build this system
  • test the system

What you need for this position?

-  Coding skills – HTML, some scripting languages, ability to pick up new languages with ease

-  Project Management - Experience in managing software and application development life cycle i.e. requirements gathering, design, development, testing, installation and maintenance

- Experience with managing servers and databases

- Experience in using content management systems

- Good understanding of web 2.0, social media, web technologies, SEO and latest online trends.

- Knowledge of internet culture and landscape.

- Either online advocacy experience or equivalent experience in website and online marketing sector

- Creativity and ability to think out of the box

-  Understanding and belief in Greenpeace’s mission and core values

Details about the job

REPORTS TO:                            Digital Media Manager

LOCATION:                               Bangalore

COMPENSATION:                       Starting pay Rs. 33, 737 per month (cost to organization)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

This job does not require much travel. Whilst every effort is taken to keep normal working hours, the candidate must be willing to work longer hours on occasion.
