Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the continent’s leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, is seeking an accomplished and driven individual to provide leadership in our wetlands and water policy efforts. The Sr. Water Policy Advisor will serve as a member of the Policy team in Washington, D.C., provide strategic thinking and targeted implementation to help achieve wetlands and water policy objectives, and further advocate DU’s national conservation policy priorities for wetlands habitat and waterfowl conservation. This position reports to the Chief Policy Officer.
Qualifications: Individual should have 10-15 years of progressive and successful professional experience demonstrating their strong interest in natural resource or agriculture conservation and water policy. Comprehensive knowledge of the congressional legislative process is essential with Capitol Hill experience strongly preferred. The individual in this position must possess strong written and verbal skills, and the ability to articulate the interests and positions of Ducks Unlimited accurately and compellingly to members of Congress and staff, federal agency leaders and staff, and DU volunteers and members. This individual should also have experience in coalition building to achieve desired outcomes and objectives. A working knowledge of current federal and state wildlife, natural resource, and agriculture conservation programs is desirable. A graduate degree in natural resource conservation, agriculture, or wildlife management, policy, law or a closely related natural resources field is also strongly preferred. Responsibilities and Duties: Individual will advise DU Policy staff and recommend sound water policy through legislative initiatives, including those that impact wildlife conservation and agriculture programs, and federal executive branch administrative rules. This individual will have supervisory responsibility, work closely with other team members in the Policy Office, with DU’s national conservation staff and DU’s regional staff and senior volunteers to develop and implement approved legislative and administrative strategies that fulfill DU’s national conservation policy objectives as represented in the DU Strategic Plan and National Business Plan.
General duties include initiating and maintaining professional relationships that will further DU’s objectives for waterfowl habitat conservation, including working with key members of Congress and congressional staff, working with U.S. Department of Interior and U.S. Department of Agriculture, officials and staff, as well as with a broad range of agricultural and natural resource conservation organizations; coordinating regional and state policy objectives, drafting Congressional testimony or comment letters; and drafting DU’s comments on proposed administrative rules, policies, and budgets.
