The Student Conservation Association is seeking a strong leader to drive the development and
implementation of integrated business development activities to meet institutional objectives.
Working at an executive level, the Senior Vice President for Business Development oversees
all aspects of growing SCA’s program including exploration of new markets, expansion of
existing markets, development and implementation of sales strategy and tracking
performance.

Located in SCA’s Washington, DC office, the Senior Vice President for Business
Development reports to the President/Chief Executive Officer and functions as a member of
the Executive Team, shaping and guiding the course and policies of the institution. She or he
will provide internal guidance and direction in ensuring completion and delivery on goals
related to achieving strategic and annual business development targets and externally, as a
national leader in the youth conservation movement.

The Senior Vice President will be responsible for leading and directing an experienced and
effective national team in the development and implementation of coordinated business
development strategies for national, regional and community program sales, partner relations
and government relations. S/he will collaborate closely with other senior executives to ensure
that business development strategies are closely aligned and mutually supportive of
Marketing, Advancement, Admissions and Program strategies to effectively achieve overall
organizational goals and revenue objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with SCA’s Regional Leadership to ensure full understanding of
    market place opportunities, seek regionally-based business expansion and assure
    alignment with national business development strategies.
  • Oversee the national, regional and community sales and retention strategies assuring
    expansion with existing partners, appropriate prioritization of resources, and regular
    monitoring of performance.
  • Based in market research and feedback, design and recommend new programs and
    business lines that are financially sound, consistent with mission, and expand SCA’s
    impact on conservation.
  • Regularly monitor SCA’s competition utilizing the results for ongoing strategy
    adjustment and/or propose changes in program design and delivery.
  • Oversee SCA’s national agency and congressional relations assuring that SCA is
    identifying and deploying program that will meet critical needs/interests; continually
    educating agency leaders and congressional members about youth in conservation
    service and when invited, offering advice/feedback on proposed legislative initiatives.
  • Provide direct supervision to Regional Leadership, National Agency and Sales
    Relations, Congressional Relations and Community Program development personnel.
  • Represent SCA in a variety of public and private venues, interacting with people of
    considerable influence in governmental, corporate, financial, philanthropic and social
    spheres such as nonprofit coalitions to help enhance SCA’s leadership position and
    secure increased financial support.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated successful business development at a senior level and on a national
    scale.
  • Experience with non-governmental organizations and/or corporations that work with
    federal, state and municipal government entities.
  • Proven track record of working at a senior level to design and implement business
    growth strategies resulting in greater mission impact and financial success.
  • Knowledge of and effective use of traditional and rapidly evolving electronic
    communication tools e.g. social networking, mobile media, etc. Knowledge of
    SalesForce.com desirable.
  • Communications skills in both oral and written formats sufficient to support the
    mission of SCA, lead and inspire confidence, establish credibility and positively
    influence others’ thinking and behavior.
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles and practices and the ability to
    prioritize projects and demands effectively within established budgets and overall
    organizational priorities.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to SCA’s mission and core values of conservation and
    youth development are, while not essential, a definite plus.
  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years experience in business development preferably with
    organizations that do business with the governmental sector.
  • An undergraduate degree is required and an advanced degree in marketing or public or
    governmental relations is preferred.
