Job/Research Summary To lead transmission integration deployment efforts for utility-scale renewable energy generation interconnections, (especially in systems with high penetration), and streamlined transmission infrastructure development work related to the recent executive orders and transmission corridor work. Projects may include technical feasibility studies (including facility and system impacts studies), review of transmission modeling studies and/or economic evaluations (including production cost modeling), development of standardized processes for integration, permitting and review, and outreach to transmission planning groups and relevant client stakeholders.
Job Duties Lead deployment projects focused on integrating large-scale renewables. Work directly with federal and international clients to provide analysis of electricity markets, interconnection standards, evaluation of technical upgrade requirements, political and stakeholder factors, and interconnection cost estimates for renewable energy integration. The position requires familiarity with electricity production simulation and reliability models, but will not run these models. Lead outreach to clients, and other stakeholders on transmission issues for renewable interconnections. May oversee subcontracts for modeling development, and integration analysis. Deliver presentations at workshops and conferences on renewable integration. Publish reports in journals/conference proceedings. Lead and support development of competitive award proposals with lab and industry partners.
Required Education and Experience Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes Apply advanced engineering technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Considered a national subject matter expert.

Demonstrates leadership in a number of areas including all team, task and/or project lead responsibilities (works independently). Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes Broad understanding of utility/ISO operations and planning methods
FERC open access orders and tariffs and regional power market rules
Broad understanding of at least 2 NERC interconnections--Eastern and Western preferred 
Knowledge and expertise to conduct cost evaluations for grid expansion
Knowledge of transmission design issues including technical, environmental and cost considerations
Knowledge of utility integration studies at transmission level
Knowledge of production cost analysis 
Knowledge and expertise to review and interpret large generation integrations studies that evaluate the impacts of solar and wind energy on transmission system operations, planning, and market functions. 
Ability to suggest revenue generating methods (e.g., demand response, ancillary services) to incorporate onsite deployed technologies
Prepare high level reports to advise specific needs of the clients 
Good network with transmission planning organizations, NERC working committees, ISO regional committees
Excellent interpersonal and teaching skills to help translate technical knowledge to less technical local and regional decision makers
Excellent collaboration skills to allow partnering across NREL and with external organizations
Ability to make recommendations on behalf of clients on transmission issues, renewable energy impacts on BES system, and revamping critical infrastructure
Ability to provide new strategies for system restorations for clients using the latest technologies such as RE, DER etc.
Preferred Qualifications Senior transmission engineer with 15 plus years of experience working in the field, with a utility or ISO in progressively responsible positions.
