As part of our work on the iconic Forth Replacement Crossing we are looking for a Senior Steelworks Engineer who as part of the Designer’s Site Supervision Team, will assist and support the DSR &  Assistant DSR – Steel Fabrication Works (ADSR)and be responsible for any aspect of the construction supervision delegated to him / her by the DSR &  ADSR.

Specifically in relation to fabrication and preparation for shipping of the steel superstructure for the cable stayed bridge and approach viaducts, the Steelworks Engineer will work independently but in close co-operation with the Main Contractor’s (FCBC) supervisory and QA/QC staff and by monitoring the works assist the ADSR to confirm they have been constructed in accordance with the Design and the Contract Specification & Employer’s Requirements.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deputise for the ADSR where necessary and when authorized to do so, e.g. issue of TQ responses, Designer Instructions, raising NCRs etc,

 Assist the ADSR to :-

  • Review fabrication drawings,
  • Review Method Statements including the selection of Hold or Witness Points;
  • Provide preliminary design solutions for TQs before involving Design Office,
  • Monitor fabrication / welding / protective treatment / load out for shipping( Must have experience),
  • Establish & maintain what records are required including as built drawings,
  • Report to the ADSR on construction progress and issues which arise in relation to works on site,
  • Attend site meetings with FCBC staff and other parties as necessary or requested,
  • Respond to and assist with Contractor’s requests for advice on site.

 Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Similar and appropriate experience on the supervision of steel fabrication on major bridge projects, either as part of an Employer, Engineer or Designer’s site team (Must have).
  • Relevant Design experience would be advantageous, but is not essential.
  • A suitable period of the above experience – You must have at least five years and/or two major bridge projects in such a role. 
  • The ability to communicate in a fluent and positive manner with other team members, the Contractor and other third parties, and to produce reports in clear English is all essential.
  • The ability to use basic computer software (e.g. MS Office etc) is essential, and the ability to use AutoCAD and other Design software would be advantageous.
  • Must have full driving licence and ability to drive on site.

 Professional Membership and Qualifications

  • Must be a Chartered Engineer and Member of ICE, IStructE or other such appropriate professional body.

 Personal Qualities

  • Ability to work within a small team of steelwork engineers / inspectors,
  • Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions,
  • Use effective negotiation and persuading skills, be able to manage and diffuse challenging situations,
  • Be able to work collaboratively with others to form strong positive working relationships with colleagues and contractors,
  • Be able to recognise own impact on others and adapt approach where appropriate,
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload to ensure timescales are met,
  • Project a professional image to colleagues and clients,
  • Demonstrate a pride in work, through high quality and accurate timely delivery,
  • Ability to work on own initiative, but also seek assistance when required,
