Description

We are looking to recruit a Senior Species Recovery Officer to lead the delivery of WWT’s contribution to an EU LIFE+ project on Red-breasted Geese in Bulgaria (http://bspb-redbreasts.org/). This will involve designing, conducting, supervising and reporting on research components of the project. Key scientific components include tracking goose movements, experimental tests of goose refuge creation and goose impacts on crops, and examination of wind farm impacts. The post holder will provide scientific advice, training and support to Bulgarian colleagues and maintain good working relationships with all parties.

The post will also involve developing and contributing to projects on other globally threatened waterbird species, such as Madagascar Pochard and Scaly-sided Merganser.

We are looking for a dynamic individual who wishes to combine conservation science with a wider project co-ordination role. The successful candidate will have excellent international project management skills and the initiative to develop and implement new projects with minimal supervision. They will have the ability to independently design, execute, analyse and publish high-quality scientific research. Experience in GIS spatial analysis and other statistical modelling is essential.

They will also have experience of spending substantial periods overseas, and conducting research in countries with lower research and conservation capacity than the UK. They will be able to live and work successfully in relative isolation, in basic living conditions while in Bulgaria for substantial periods of time.

They will also possess the diplomatic skills needed to maintain cordial relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders within and outside the species recovery programmes, and have the cultural sensitivity and awareness to build good relationships with partners, stakeholders and public.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 23rd June 2011 at WWT’s HQ, Slimbridge.
