The Oceans Program works to find constructive solutions to the most critical problems threatening the world's marine environments. At the national, regional, and international levels, our team of scientists, attorneys and economists are working with fishermen to establish fair and sensible limits on their catch that will allow fisheries to recover. EDF’s Oceans Program works to improve the health of the oceans via innovative and durable solutions to today’s toughest fishery management challenges. Our Oceans Program has focused on fisheries in the waters of the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean and Europe and is beginning to implement its strategy to influence fisheries reform globally to ensure more fish in the water, more food on the plate, and more prosperous communities.

The Knowledge and Solutions Center of EDF’s Oceans Program is a diverse team of global fishery experts who provide research-driven insight on improving fisheries management. With a focus on design, markets, policy and science, the Center is a recognized leader on the diagnosis of fisheries problems and the implementation of comprehensive solutions. From data to design, the Center equips fishermen, fishery managers and other stakeholders with the knowledge, tools and training they need to boost the profitability and sustainability of their fisheries.

Overall Function

The Senior Specialist will lead the implementation the Ocean Program’s initiative to leverage the advocacy potential of the seafood value chain, and create market incentives for innovative fisheries and fishermen. S/he will be required to create partnerships, conduct analyses and foster collaboration among NGO’s and supply chain actors such as: fishing associations, processors, wholesalers, retailers, trade associations and chefs. Under the leadership of the Director of Impact, Knowledge and Solutions Center, and working closely with Oceans Program implementation teams, s/he will enhance EDF fisheries policy and management objectives through unique networks and expertise.
 
Key Responsibilities

The Senior Specialist, Seafood Market Strategy will perform the following duties:

  • Act as the primary implementer of EDF’s seafood value chain strategy, ensuring that it advances key Program objectives. Work with Director of Impact to develop strategy and adapt as needed.
  • Grow EDF’s network of seafood value chain relationships, leverage it for maximal impact; and identify new opportunities for collaboration.
  • Create and execute market strategies that strengthen and advance regional fishery improvements, including engaging supply chain actors in advocacy and increasing the value of fishery products.
  • Communicate project goals and results to EDF staff, industry partners, policymakers, NGOs, the media and the public through reports, interviews, presentations, and other methods.
  • Act as the lead point of contact with Oceans Program implementation staff to ensure our seafood value chain initiatives are a key tool in advancing regional objectives, including by strengthening relationships with fishermen and other industry stakeholders.
  • Understand on-the-gound projects and identify strategic opportunities to use supply chain strategies to enhance work on the ground.
  • Working with the Research and Application teams, codify different types of supply chain engagements and develop tools and protocols, as appropriate, to support the increase uptake of these approaches in our on-the-ground work.
  • Play an integral role in other activities including project budget development and oversight, fundraising, grant reporting and consultant management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degress with at least 4 years program or related experience, or advanced degree in Science, Policy or Economics in areas related to environmental or marine resources policy, aquatic sciences, environmental sciences or related fields with at least 2 years of direct experience.
  • Strong understanding of seafood markets, fisheries policy and related environmental and economic sustainability issues;
  • Understanding of effective fisheries management including the theory and practice of catch shares or rights-based management a plus.
  • Experience in project management and exceptional personal organization and attention to detail;
  • An ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both independently and as a member of small teams in a dynamic and creative environment;
  • Strong analytical skills and experience performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work;
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Able to work collaboratively with a variety of concerned parties including other NGOs, seafood industry partners, and fishermen.
