Directory Entry : Founded in 1967 as the Environmental Defense Fund, we tackle the most serious environmental problem...a scrappy group of scientists and a lawyer on Long Island, New York, fighting to save osprey from the toxic pesticide DDT. Using scientific evidence, our founders got DDT banned nationwide. Today, we’re one of the world's leading environmental organizations. In the U.S., Fortune magazine called our board one of the country's most influential nonprofit boards. You can see the jobs of the EDF on their website.

Our Oceans Program focuses on safeguarding marine ecosystems and fisheries in the U.S and around the world.

We are now seeking a Senior Specialist who will manage, coordinate, and implement our fisheries management reform strategy in the U.S. Northeast, including recreational fisheries management. The Senior Specialist will be a principal player in achieving the program’s fisheries goals for the U.S Northeast region. This will involve developing and implementing program strategies, coordinating consultants and team members to meet project objectives and milestones, communicating with a broad diversity of influential stakeholders and helping to develop and implement novel science and policy tools. This position can be based in either our Boston, MA or Washington, DC office, and will report to the Oceans Program’s Northeast Regional Director.

Frequent travel throughout the U.S. Northeast, from Maine to Virginia, is required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Senior Specialist will perform the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Help to develop and implement strategies for fisheries management improvements in the U.S. Northeast. This includes researching relevant topics, developing external partnerships, using media and outreach materials, conducting on-the-ground assessments and identifying and developing key fishermen and stakeholder supporters.
  • Build effective coalitions, particularly within the recreational fishing sector, based both within and outside the Northeast region to better achieve sustainability goals.
  • Identify and lead efforts working directly with key fishermen and other stakeholders to effectively leverage their voices with federal council members, state commission members, state and federal agency officials and other key decision makers to advance sound fisheries policies and regulations throughout the Northeast.
  • Participate in and/or oversee community outreach efforts to ensure successful plan implementation.
  • Recruit and help oversee outside consultants on the development of research and information to advance our objectives.
  • Track and evaluate program results through surveys, project data analysis, and after-action reviews
  • Stay abreast of new developments in fisheries management and market development.
  • Write a variety of documents for public consumption including publications, fact sheets, press releases, blog posts, and op-eds.
  • Serve on federal and state advisory panels and committees key to advancing sound fisheries management in the region, as needed.
  • Engage in fundraising support activities and collaborate on proposals and reports required by grantors and other requesting parties.
  • Undertake and complete special projects as assigned by the Northeast Regional Director.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in marine biology, public or environmental policy or related field required.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in natural resource management, public policy, government relations and/or non-profit advocacy required. Environmental policy experience is a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with immediate and long-term deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively with nonprofit colleagues and partners, scientists and economists, industry leaders, regulators and public policy decision makers.
