We are expanding our Sustainability and Corporate Environment function to add a whole new team facing off to our operations businesses and we are looking for an experienced and energised environmental management leader to head up and build this new team.
This role provides huge scope to have real impact protecting and regenerating the environment in London, as well as making the capital sustainable for generations to come. Your team will be responsible for providing support across all our operational modes, including those directly operated and maintained by TfL as well as contracted services and our wider corporate operations. Your team will work to develop and embed our Corporate Environment Plan and environmental management system, ensuring that Transport for London (TfL) can move people safely, inclusively and sustainably across London. This is an exciting time to be joining an expanding team helping TfL reach our goal of being the strong, green heartbeat for London.
As well as, providing support and technical advice to our day-to-day operations and maintenance teams, your team of environment managers will provide environmental coaching, and be responsible for environmental improvement activity and management system development, monitoring and review. The role requires collaborative working with teams across TfL and externally, to improve TfL’s environmental and business performance.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide technical advice on environmental impacts to the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) directorate and to the wider business.
- Champion the TfL Corporate Environment Plan, by providing support and direction across the whole business. Support and challenge the business to deliver on activities to improve our corporate environmental performance in line with Plan. Help coordinate and track activities and progress against plans to ensure continued progress
- Ensure environmental risks are adequately captured and measured in SHE risk models.
- Support the development and ongoing improvement of TfL’s Environmental Management System, including assurance of the system
- Manage the development of environmental training interventions as needed to upskill colleagues across the business.
- Provide advice and input to other SHE teams and the business on environmental issues, including using performance data
- Provide environmental input to the procurement processes by developing contract clauses, assessing tenders, monitoring contractors’ performance.
- Define the standards of knowledge expected within the SHE advisers’/business partnering teams around our environmental impacts, legislation and activities and make sure this is reflected in skills, knowledge and experience frameworks.
- Lead staff and build a culture of coaching and development across the team, ensuring the development of staff succession plans, identification of skills needs and securing appropriate training and development. Ensure the right behaviours cascade within the team.

- Leading a team and building capability to fit business need and ensuring team members are engaged and supported (essential)
