The Scientist will work on the adaptation of people who depend on forests to climate change and the role of local institutions and national or international policies in facilitating adaptation. The work includes research, management, fund-raising and coordination.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on adaptation to climate change

Specific research plan will be defined at the beginning of the contract. Research activities may include:

  1. Analysing the role of local institutions (including rights and tenure) in shaping social vulnerability to climate change and facilitating adaptation of men and women.
  2. Recommending approaches for local governance reforms for enhancing adaptive capacities.
  3. Analysing national and international policy networks and processes related to climate change adaptation.
  4. Developing national and regional strategies for mainstreaming adaptation in national policies.
  5. Working with field partners and interacting with policy makers for enhancing the impacts of the research on policy and development.
  6. Teaming up with CIFOR scientists and partners to implement research activities.
  7. Producing publications and briefs, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Contribute to CIFOR domain on adaptation to climate change

This task includes, among other things:

  1. Serving as a facilitator and resource person for activities related to climate change adaptation.
  2. Developing and maintaining donor relations; reporting to donors and making sure that donor requirements are met; attending donor meetings, contributing to research proposals, coordinating with other scientists to leverage funding.
  3. Representing CIFOR at international meetings, engaging with a variety of partners and stakeholders, developing and maintaining functional partnerships.
  4. Providing scientific mentoring to junior staff engaged in CIFOR projects related to climate change adaptation, supporting capacity building initiatives and staff development, and encouraging continuous improvement and learning.

Details of duties, assignments and objectives will be further discussed and laid out in the staff’s annual performance contract.

Requirements

Education, experience and technical skills

  • PhD in an appropriate discipline in the social sciences (e.g., political science, public policy, political economy, development studies) with a focus on institutional analysis, and an excellent understanding of issues related to climate change adaptation and governance
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in collaborative research
  • Strong publications record especially in peer-reviewed publications
  • Track record in resource mobilisation and fund raising and in proposal development and writing
  • Fluency in English is required. Fluency in other languages used in countries where CIFOR works will be appreciated (e.g., French, Indonesian, Portuguese, Spanish)

Personal attributes and competencies

  • Management and organisational skill, experience in project management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experienced in working with multicultural and multidisciplinary research teams, experience in developing countries
  • Excellent facilitation and teambuilding capacity
  • Values the sharing of information and continuous improvement in a cooperative atmosphere of constructive evaluation and learning, and is committed to staff’s development

Terms and Conditions

  • This is an international position.
  • CIFOR offers a competitive remuneration in USD and will be commensurate with skills and experience.
  • The appointment will be for a period of three years with a possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
  • The duty station will be at the CIFOR headquarters in Bogor, Indonesia.
