Job Title: Senior Scientist, Arctic Oceanography
Job Location: Tromsø, Norway

The research group on Oceanography and Climate (http://www.imr.no/forskning/faggrupper/oseanografi/en) at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) has an opening for a full time permanent position for a physical oceanographer to conduct research related to the Arctic. The position is located in Tromsø in northern Norway.

We are looking for a scientist to lead research studies on polar oceanography in the Arctic, with special emphasis on the Polar Ocean. The person will also be involved with interdisciplinary ecosystem research in conjunction with biogeochemists, ecologists and fisheries scientists. The successful applicant will be responsible for coordinating IMR’s collaboration with the University of Tromsø in terms of physical oceanographic education. The candidate will also be part in providing advice to the Norwegian government in matters related to the Arctic.

The Polar Ocean is receiving increasing attention by the Norwegian government and IMR intends to strengthen its research in this region. During the past several years, the scientific expertise in Polar science has been developing rapidly especially in Tromsø at several institutions, including the High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment, referred to as the Fram Centre, where IMR is a partner (http://www.framsenteret.no/english.150370.no.html). This increased activity in the region provides a great opportunity for collaborative research. Norway is also building an ice-breaker to be launched in 2015 that will be available for oceanographic/ecological field studies in the Arctic.

We are looking for a senior scientist with proven expertise in polar oceanography. The applicants should have a proven publication record in high quality international peer-reviewed journals as well as experience leading and participating in projects and field studies in the Arctic. Knowledge of instrumentation for oceanographic studies and involvement in interdisciplinary studies aimed at understanding the impacts of climate and physical oceanography on the ecosystem would be a definite advantages. Experience in teaching and in providing management advice would also be an asset.

Further, applicants must have a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, have proven success in writing scientific proposals, and experience in coordinating and leading science programs/ projects. They should have demonstrated administrative abilities, be fluent in English, and have strong skills in written and verbal communication. They should also be able to demonstrate that they work well in team situations. Applicants that do not master Norwegian language must be willing to learn Norwegian (within 2 years).

The position is paid according to the state salary regulations.
