Description

Function: Design, plan and coordinate the implementation of operational ocean forecasting systems, including numerical ocean numerical models at the whole Mediterranean and sub-regional scales, data assimilation systems, quality control of forecasts and development of Decision Support Systems for situational sea awareness, search and rescue, oil spill and marine environment quality.

Location: CMCC Headquarters in Lecce, Puglia or in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Environment: The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change is an Ltd Company (CMCC S.c.a.r.l. http://www.cmcc.it) with research units in Lecce, Bologna, Venice, Capua, Sassari, Milan and Benevento. CMCC aims to promote and coordinate research in climate change and environmental impacts at Italian national level. These activities are carried out in collaboration with Universities, national and international research bodies and the industrial sector. CMCC will start a new action in the framework of operational oceanography, in particular for the production of short-term ocean forecasts, analysis and applications. This position is open under the sponsorship of the Italian project ‘development of TEchnologies for the Situational Sea Awareness’ (TESSA) awarded to CMCC by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. The TESSA project will develop a set of products and services for Situational Sea Awareness based on new operational oceanography environmental data integrated into advanced technological platforms for users in the maritime sector, tourism and environmental protection.

Main Duties: The new appointee should design, plan, implement and improve high resolution numerical models at Mediterranean and sub-regional scales (i.e. Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea, southern Italian coastal zones) including the development and implementation of data assimilation systems and coordinate the set up of the operational forecasting chain. The new appointee should also coordinate the development of Decision Support Systems (i.e. situational sea awareness, search and rescue, oil spill and marine environment quality) coupled with high-resolution ocean circulation model products.

Qualifications: The candidates should have a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, mathematics, physics, informatics, hydraulic engineering or related disciplines. Knowledge and a well established experience in ocean numerical modelling is required. Knowledge of operational ocean forecasting, high performance computing and data assimilation techniques will be considered a plus.

The 2 positions will require:
Senior Scientist: minimum 10 years working experience and coordination of research groups.
Scientist: minimum 6 years working experience.

Fluency in English is required.

Salary: The positions range from Scientist to Senior Scientist depending on the candidate profile:
- Scientist gross yearly salary (before tax deduction) starting from  €42.000,00
- Senior Scientist gross yearly salary (before tax deduction) starting from € 70.000,00.

Starting date: January-March 2012.

Length of contract: one-year position renewable up to three years.
