QUALIFICATIONS Education A PhD or equivalent from a recognized university or technical institute in meteorology, oceanography, (applied) physics or mathematics, computer science with specialization in climate, meteorological, oceanographic observations, modelling, and data assimilation research. Experience At least ten years of combined national and international progressively responsible experience in Earth observation and/or numerical modelling relevant for climate and Earth system analysis and prediction. Proven leadership in the development and implementation of observational and modelling programmes and projects in Earth/climate system as demonstrated by publications and management responsibilities. Experience in writing technical reports, documents and scientific publications in English, in organizing scientific and coordination meetings, in overseeing budgets for such activities, and managing people, projects and programmes. Other requirements Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of national and international Earth observation and modelling programmes. Ability to learn fast, adapt to changing requirements, keep abreast of modern developments and requirements in observations, modelling, data assimilation, re-analysis, and Earth/climate system prediction. Maturity of judgment, sense of responsibility, demonstrated talent and ability for coordinating large international projects in cooperation with national and international research programmes and partners. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Languages Excellent knowledge of English or French and a good working knowledge of the other language. Knowledge of other official languages of the WMO Secretariat would be an advantage. (Note: the working languages of the WMO Secretariat are English and French. The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
