We need science and engineering professionals to play a central part in reducing energy use.

This is an excellent opportunity to join our Technical Energy Analysis team, a central team of scientists in DECC. You will provide the technical evidence base required to support our key policies, including Green Deal, Renewable Heat Incentive and strategies for 2050. It’s the chance to support policy makers by undertaking work on a range of emerging priorities.

As Senior Scientific Officer, you will develop our non-domestic buildings programme. You’ll assess the potential for energy reduction through understanding consumption patterns and the performance of individual technologies and packages, especially in the field. The Higher Scientific Officers will provide support on heat, including heat pump performance testing, storage and wider systems effects. All will maintain up-to-date knowledge of the wider research landscape and commission, manage and promote the outcomes of research projects.

You’ll come to us with sound scientific knowledge and judgement and strong analytical and numeracy skills, totally in your comfort zone communicating research findings to non-specialists clearly and effectively. An engineering or science graduate, you’ll bring experience of the energy sector – heat, energy use in buildings, infrastructure or energy systems. For the Higher Scientific Officer working on heat pumps, you will also need the ability to program and conduct numerical analysis using data analysis software like MATLAB.

Confident working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will ideally have a higher degree in science or engineering. You may have a background in the buildings sector or energy industry. In return, you will gain the chance to influence national strategy, support evidence-based policy development, develop and prove yourself working in large and complex delivery programmes, and will work with, and build networks in government, academia and the energy industry, all from a London base.

Play a key role in supporting our mission to power the country and protect the planet.

Interviews: expected to be week beginning 18th June 2012.

DECC values equality and diversity in employment and welcomes applications from all sectors of society.
