We are the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), an independent research organisation that aims to deliver positive change on a global scale.

We are currently looking for a Senior Researcher to join our team to lead our policy advocacy work on nature, climate and development. This post is a joint appointment between our Biodiversity Team in the Natural Resources Group (NRG) and our Climate Change Group (CCG). Funding is secure to April 2022 and for this period, the focus of the role is explicitly on helping IIED increase its engagement with CBD, UNFCCC processes and leading a series of high-profile events and communications linked to these processes.

To continue in the role beyond April 2022, you will be expected to contribute to the fundraising efforts of the Institute and develop new policy-focussed work, as well as continuing to raise IIED and partner profiles in the climate and biodiversity policy arenas through policy engagement and policy-relevant research; stakeholder engagement and capacity development; and communications and advocacy.

The Benefits

- Salary of £47,009 - £51,783 per annum DOE
- Benefits package
- Fast-paced and engaging work environment

If you have experience of working on international climate and biodiversity policy, this is an exciting opportunity to develop a new role in a leading international think tank.

Our mission is the build a fairer, more sustainable world using evidence, action and influence, working in partnership with others. If you think you could help us to achieve our vision, we would love to hear from you.

The Role

As the Nature-Climate Policy Lead, you will help to shape and promote a climate-nature-development triple agenda in international biodiversity, climate change and sustainable development policy processes, as well as in other international and UK political policy forums.

You will identify critical moments in UNFCCC, CBD and wider UN (e.g. SDGs, UNGA) policy processes, and non-state actors’ processes to promote IIED key partner organisations’ policy positions.

Your role will involve:

- Leading IIED advocacy, engagement, and co-ordination on nature and climate in international policy negotiations
- Developing new projects and ensuring coherence with existing institutional work on nature climate and development
- Communicating and co-ordinating engagement in policy processes
- Working with the Head of Media to raise the profiles of IIED and our partners on biodiversity, climate and development issues
- Supporting fundraising for this area of work

- Proven experience with international policy frameworks, agreements and initiatives addressing nature, climate and development
- Experience of working on climate and biodiversity issues, particularly in the context of links with local and national development
- Proven experience of engaging with international organisations, government agencies, academics, NGOs and other civil society organisations working on nature, climate and development
- Experience of creating, developing and/or working within consortia, networks, alliances, partnerships and international teams
- Excellent knowledge of UNFCCC, CBD and wider UN (e.g. SDG, UNGA) policy processes, as well as the key issues related to climate-nature-development triple agenda thinking, demonstrated through a record of relevant innovative and influential work and publications
- A relevant postgraduate degree, or a relevant degree and formal training, or equivalent experience
- The willingness to travel internationally (in line with COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions)

Excellent knowledge of UK political decision-making processes, particularly in relation to FCO/DFID, DEFRA and UK involvement in international policy forums (G7, UNGA etc.) would be beneficial. Excellent knowledge of LDC and/or Chinese government decision makers and international engagement processes would also be an advantage, as would the ability to read and write in French, Spanish and/or Mandarin.
