Senior Researcher at the EFIMED Office

The European Forest Institute (EFI) is an international organisation established by European States. The EFIMED – Mediterranean Regional Office of EFI: 

• coordinates and promotes research and networking on Mediterranean forests, forestry and forest products;
• responds to policy needs by providing science-based information on forests and forestry at the Mediterranean level, disseminating research results to all interested parties
• supports scientific capacity-building, especially in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries, and - consolidates an international forest research network, aiming to overcome the fragmentation of the Mediterranean forest research community.

Furthermore, EFIMED promotes and conducts research as well as comparative studies on key scientific priorities within the scope of the Mediterranean Forest Research Agenda: 

• Impact of climate and land-use changes on forest ecosystems functioning and related key resources: water and soil
• Integration of the risk of forest fires in land use and forest management planning
• Economic tools and policies for sustainable forest goods and services
• Models and decision systems for optimising forest management planning

Tasks and responsibilities:

The field of research for this position is forest economics and forest policy. Research carried out by the researcher may address the socio-economic nature of forest ecosystem services, forest goods supply chain, forest related policies, or the potential of Mediterranean forest goods and services in the emerging bioeconomy context. The senior researcher will be responsible for leading and developing research in the indicated research field. The person to be appointed, in addition, must have excellent abilities in applying for external funding and he/she is expected to engage in active international collaboration in the research field. Furthermore, he/she should also promote and coordinat at the Mediterranean level research networking activities (events, studies, capacity building, publications, etc) within EFI and between its member organisations and relevant forest stakeholders on the above mentioned topics.

Qualifications:

• PhD in the field of forest economics or environmental economics;
• Proven track of record of publications in the field of forest economics and policy;
• At least 5 years of working experience in research;
• Experience in coordination research projects or studies on topics relevant for this position;
• Proven record in fund-raising for research.
• Profiency in English, knowledge of French and Spanish is an asset.
• Excellent managerial, networking and communication skills.
• Capability of creating an inspiring team work environment.
• Knowledge of EFI and its Network is an asset.

Duty station:

The employee will be based at the premises of the European Forest Institute Mediterranean Regional Office and Policy Support Office in Barcelona, Spain.

Employment conditions:

The employee will be an EFI staff member. The working language of the Institute is English. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the post in spring-summer 2013. A fixed term appointment of two years is envisaged with an option for extension.
