Description

Peninsula Medical School, within the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, is widely regarded as the strongest of the new medical schools in the UK. It has established an excellent reputation for high quality educational programmes and has a high quality and expanding research portfolio. From the outset the School has sought to build an international research reputation, to complement its innovative educational programme, through tight focus on areas of strength and exploitation of its pan-peninsula status.

The European Centre for Environment and Human Health is the newest of the College's research centres and has received financial support from the European Regional Development Fund.  ECEHH has two key strands of research: Horizon Scanning/Emerging Threats; and, Health and Wellbeing from the Natural Environment.  The emphasis is on the interconnectedness of human and environmental health, particularly the risks and benefits from human interactions with the environment in terms of the health of both humans and the environment.

The role is to examine and analyse how national and local policies in each climate change, sustainability and human health support or contradict one another. The role will involve developing a detailed understanding of how climate mitigation and adaptation strategies will affect efforts to implement reduced carbon footprints strategies, increase the efficiency of energy use and reduce the production of waste. The consequences of these measures for human health and wellbeing will be investigated. This will include consideration of the implications of implementing the NHS Route Map for Sustainable Health. The overall aim of the research is to identify opportunities to remove inconsistencies from policies designed to minimise adverse climate change impacts, enhance sustainability while at the same time contributing to improvements in human health and wellbeing.

You will hold a PhD in a relevant field and have a proven track record of policy research in Climate Change, Sustainability and Human Health with knowledge of and experience of undertaking environmental and / or health policy studies.  A good record of research publication in peer-reviewed journals and a track record of successful grant applications are also essential.

You must also have excellent organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail, good verbal and written communications skills. In addition you must be a good team player and have good time management skills.
