Description

Function: implement and support the operational production chain of ocean forecasting systems, implement user friendly stand alone and web-based Decision Support Systems for end-users applications in the field of situational sea awareness, oil spill, search and rescue and marine environment quality.

Location: CMCC Headquarters in Lecce, Puglia or in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Environment: The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change is an Ltd Company (CMCC S.c.a.r.l. http://www.cmcc.it) with research units in Lecce, Bologna, Venice, Capua, Sassari, Milan and Benevento. CMCC aims to promote and coordinate research in climate change and environmental impacts at Italian national level. These activities are carried out in collaboration with Universities, national and international research bodies and the industrial sector. CMCC will start a new action in the framework of operational oceanography, in particular for the production of short term ocean forecasts, analysis and applications. This position is open under the sponsorship of the Italian project ‘development of TEchnologies for the Situational Sea Awareness’ (TESSA) awarded to CMCC by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. The TESSA project will develop a set of products and services for Situational Sea Awareness based on new operational oceanography environmental data integrated into advanced technological platforms for users in the maritime sector, tourism and environmental protection.

Main Duties:
The new appointees should work to improve, implement and support the operational production chain of ocean forecasting systems. The activities will include the post-processing of the operational forecasting products to be used by technological applications. The appointees will design and implement user friendly web-based interfaces for data access, data processing and visualization, including end-user applications for early warning and hazard mapping for oil spill dispersal, and/or search and rescue and/or ship routing.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of database management, development of database, web design, web interfaces data processing will be required. Applied mathematics, numeric methods skill will be considered as a plus. A Master in informatics, mathematics, engineering or related disciplines will be considered a plus.
Knowledge of UNIX shell scripting, PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Web GIS (Google Maps) is required and Fortran will be welcome.
Experience in development of database web interfaces will be considered a plus.
Fluency in English will be considered a plus.

The 4 positions will require:
1 Senior Research Associate: minimum 5 years working experience.
3 Junior Research Associate: see above described qualifications.

Salary:
-    Senior Research Associate: gross yearly salary (before tax deduction) starting from  €33.000,00.
-    Junior Research Associate: gross yearly salary (before tax deduction) starting from €21.000,00.

Starting date: January-March 2012.

Length of contract: one-year position renewable up to three years.
